The Great Silk Road Gets a Glow-Up
Imagine a scene from a thousand years ago with a few dozen merchants trudging through the monster of all deserts: long, treacherous, and seemingly unending. It must have been something similar to what we think of when we visualize a particularly bad Monday work commute. These merchants were loaded down with huge amounts of silks, valuable enough to pay rents for half a year, and spices that would be enough to start a war. These merchants would arrive at Bukhara, an oasis in the desert, to trade goods with artisans that would make pottery and carpets that would belong in a museum. The Silk and Spices Festival 2028 brings this historical magic, without the dehydration.

Worthwhile Shopping
At this festival, bazaars don’t mean boring overstock shopping. Throughout the festival, there are artisans selling breath taking silk weaving from Margilan that you wouldn’t believe requires years of experience just to even comprehend the methods of weaving. There are artisans firing metal in a way that makes you think they may be a blacksmith in a movie. There are artisans slying jewels to create pieces that make the people back home scram with envy. And then there are artisans crafting pottery that makes you want to throw away all your store bought crap.
The spice section alone is worth a trip to Uzbekistan. There is saffron, cumin, and black nigella which you need in your life, and that’s not even scratching the surface. I don’t recommend this trip if you mind your luggage weight limit.
Master Classes and Medieval Games
If you're interested, you can take a crash course in medieval craftsmanship at a master class held in an actual historical site. Ever seen miniature paintings? Want to learn to create one? Is medieval embroidery your thing? The workshops are hosted by medieval craftsmen who are keeping ancient traditions alive.
If workshops are boring and you prefer passive entertainment, the craft competition will interest you. It’s held at the Ark fortress. It has medieval games like wrestling (yes, it has cockfighting!), and tightrope walking, which might cause you to sweat just from watching it. The festivities will end with a big concert at the Poi-Kalyan Complex, where medieval folk musicians will perform from under the stars across the ancient 12th-century minaret.
