USA now only accepts visa application from country of residence or citizenship
From the 6th September, 2025 the Visa application process has undergone a drastic modification, now, the process can only be done in the applicants country of citizenship or residency. This is a revision on the ease of entry for applicants, and the revision seems to be with respect to the greater reforms on security and ease of administration of the Visa.
In the past, applicants submitted to any country and the process was done with ease and in a timely fashion, as opposed to the country of residence. This was especially beneficial to those with work or travel obligations. The law however, seems to ease the process of residency. In this case the applicant is able to physically travel to their country of residence.
For travelers, students, and business individuals intending to come to the United States, the new rule’s implementation may entail a bit more preparation. Those overseas or intending to apply from a third country will have to change their plans and even, in some cases, may have to return to their home country in order to apply. Visa applicants must contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to obtain instructions regarding the scheduling of requisite visa appointment, documentation, and submission of additional instructions provided.
This policy is a significant change in the American approach to adminstering visas, and it comes at a time when there is increasing likelihood of being border controls will becoming more stringent and visa processing more rigorous. All travelers are urged to take time to understand the new requirements in order to enhance the likelihood that their travel plans are kept to.
