Delta adds JFK - Sardinia and Malta Routes
Delta Air Lines has gone full democracy mode and decided to let its most loyal flyers - and its own employees - pick the next big summer destinations. The result? A tie that Delta happily turned into a win-win for everyone: starting summer 2026, you’ll be able to fly nonstop from New York–JFK to Sardinia (Olbia) and Malta. Yes, two Mediterranean islands, both fabulous, both getting their first-ever direct U.S. flights.
How It Happened: The Great Route Race
It all started with Delta’s first-ever “Route Race”—a vote where SkyMiles Members picked Sardinia while Delta employees championed Malta. Instead of choosing just one, Delta shrugged and said, “Why not both?” (Honestly, a rare and welcome case of an airline being generous.)
So here we are, with two brand-new sun-soaked destinations on the map.
When and How You Can Go
- Olbia, Sardinia – Service kicks off May 20, 2026, four times weekly.
- Malta – First flight departs June 7, 2026, three times weekly.
Both will be operated by Delta’s trusty Boeing 767-300ERs, featuring Delta One®, Premium Select, Comfort+, and Main Cabin. Translation: whether you’re sipping champagne up front or digging into snacks in the back, you’re still crossing the Atlantic in comfort.
And because Delta knows presentation is everything, expect Missoni-designed amenities, curated Mediterranean-inspired meals, and (drumroll) free Wi-Fi. So yes, you can Instagram your Aperol spritz in real time.

Why This Matters
This move makes Delta the largest U.S. carrier to Italy and—here’s the kicker—the first airline to operate scheduled transatlantic flights to Malta. That’s right: no one’s done it before. Delta just made U.S.-to-Malta history.
Local leaders in both Sardinia and Malta are calling the routes “historic milestones” that will fuel tourism, boost business ties, and help strengthen global connections. Translation: more Americans eating pasta in Sardinia, more Maltese locals explaining that yes, their island has more to offer than just dramatic Game of Thrones backdrops.
The Bottom Line
Delta’s summer 2026 schedule is giving New Yorkers something new to brag about: easy access to two gorgeous Mediterranean islands without awkward layovers. Sardinia promises jaw-dropping beaches, luxury yachts, and pasta that’ll ruin boxed spaghetti for you forever. Malta delivers ancient temples, stunning coastlines, and a nightlife scene that punches way above its weight.
So pack the sunscreen, practice saying “grazie” and “grazzi hafna,” and get ready to fly.
