New Zealand broadens use of NZeTA
Big news from the land of sheep, rugby, and the occasional hobbit: New Zealand is expanding its NZeTA system (that’s short for “New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority”) starting November 3, 2025. Translation? If you’re from certain Pacific nations or China — and you’re already hanging out in Australia — getting into New Zealand is about to get a whole lot easier.
That’s right. New Zealand’s rolling out not one but two pilot programs aimed at making border formalities smoother, friendlier, and less likely to induce airport stress sweats. But don’t get too excited just yet — there’s still a bit of fine print involved.
NZeTA 101: The magic ticket before you fly
The NZeTA is basically New Zealand’s way of saying, “Sure, you can visit us — but please ask nicely first.” It’s an online pre-approval that most travelers from visa-waiver countries need before hopping on a flight to Auckland.
Think of it as an electronic permission slip: you fill in your details, upload your selfie, pay a small fee, and voilà — you’re ready to meet the Kiwis (the people and the birds).

Pilot Program #1: Pacific travelers get a boost
Starting November 3, citizens of Pacific Islands Forum countries — like Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu — will be able to fly from Australia to New Zealand without a visa. All they’ll need is a valid Australian visa and a shiny new NZeTA, which can be requested from October 27 onward.
In other words, if you’ve already got a visa that lets you live, work, or even fall in love Down Under, you can now hop over the Tasman Sea and enjoy New Zealand’s epic scenery for up to three months visa-free.
According to Immigration New Zealand, “Instead of applying for a visa, eligible travelers can use an NZeTA to enter New Zealand from Australia.” Which is bureaucrat-speak for “We’ve finally made this simpler.”
The program will run for 12 months, covering 12 Pacific nations, including the Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, and Tuvalu — basically, all your South Pacific holiday favorites.
Pilot Program #2: China joins the club
Chinese travelers are also getting in on the fun. From November 3, 2025, citizens of China with a valid Australian visa will be able to visit New Zealand visa-free under a similar 12-month trial.
Just like their Pacific counterparts, they’ll still need an NZeTA (and an eligible Aussie visa), but that’s a small price to pay for some fresh air, green hills, and possibly the world’s best flat white.
The fine print (because there’s always fine print)
Even with these new relaxed rules, the NZeTA remains mandatory for all visitors from visa-waiver countries. And yes, it still comes with the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy — a fancy way of saying “you’re helping us protect the environment while you enjoy it.”
Applications can be made online at nzeta.immigration.govt.nz or through the official app. It only takes a few minutes, but officials suggest doing it at least 72 hours before your flight, just in case. Once approved, your NZeTA lasts for two years and allows multiple entries — perfect if you fall in love with the place and keep coming back.
And before you land, you’ll also need to fill out the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which covers the usual questions about health, customs, and whether you’re smuggling fruit or feelings.
So, to sum it up: fewer forms, shorter queues, and a warmer Kiwi welcome for Pacific and Chinese travelers — all while keeping those border checks running smoother than a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Cheers to that.
