The Village with More Cats Than People

The Village with More Cats Than People

If you’ve ever dreamed of being surrounded by cats, Japan has taken that dream, multiplied it by a hundred, and turned it into an island. Welcome to Aoshima, also known as Cat Island, where there are reportedly more than 100 cats and fewer than 10 humans. Yep — the felines have officially taken over.

Forget bustling Tokyo or historic Kyoto — Aoshima is a whole different vibe. It’s peaceful, remote, and full of fluffy overlords who clearly run the place. You’ll arrive expecting a quiet fishing village, and instead, you’re greeted by a furry welcome committee that looks suspiciously like they’re evaluating whether you brought snacks.

Welcome to Aoshima, Japan – The Purrfect Getaway!

Population: Mostly Cats

Once upon a time, Aoshima was a small fishing community. Locals introduced cats to help control the mice that were nibbling at their catch. The cats, being the opportunistic geniuses they are, decided they liked island life — and just… never left.

Over time, the human population shrank, but the cats? They multiplied like, well, cats. Now, for every resident, there are around a dozen feline neighbors. It’s basically a live-action version of The Aristocats — minus the jazz.

What’s It Like to Visit?

First, you’ll need to take a ferry from Ehime Prefecture, and here’s your first clue this isn’t your average tourist spot: the ferry only runs twice a day. Miss it, and congratulations — you’ve just booked yourself an unplanned overnight stay with 100 cats.

Once you arrive, the island feels surreal. There are cats lounging on docks, sunbathing on steps, napping on fishing boats, and occasionally judging you from rooftops. They’re not shy either — they’ll happily stroll up, rub against your legs, and demand attention (or food… probably food).

If your idea of paradise involves purring, whiskers, and fur therapy, Aoshima is your heaven on Earth.

Rules of the (Cat) Kingdom

Visitors are welcome — as long as they respect the local way of life. That means:
🐾 Don’t feed them anything weird (cat snacks are okay, sushi is not).
🐾 Keep your distance if they’re not in the mood (they’ll make that very clear).
🐾 Bring your own supplies — there’s no convenience store in Cat City.

Basically, it’s like visiting any small Japanese village, except this one has a much higher chance of someone meowing at you.

Fun Thought

If the cats ever decided to hold an election, humans would be outnumbered faster than you can say “meow.”

Aoshima proves what cat lovers already know: the world would probably run just fine if cats were in charge — naps would be mandatory, snacks would be plentiful, and absolutely no one would rush for the ferry.

💬 Would you brave the ferry to visit this feline wonderland, or is this too much fur for one lifetime?
