Egypt Tests New Digital Visa-on-Arrival System
Egypt Tests New Digital Visa-on-Arrival System — Say Goodbye to Long Airport Lines
If you’ve ever stood in a Cairo airport line thinking, “There has to be a faster way…”, Egypt is about to answer your prayers. The country has kicked off the testing phase of a shiny new tourist visa-on-arrival system — and yes, it’s digital, QR-coded, and designed to make your entry smoother than a fresh cup of mint tea.
Minister Sherif Fathy Leads the Charge
On November 20, 2025, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, convened top officials in the New Administrative Capital to check on progress. His message?
“We need to speed things up and make airports more pleasant — because no one wants to start their Egyptian adventure stuck in a queue.”
At the heart of this upgrade: a QR code-based system. Travelers will be able to pay the visa fee digitally and receive their visa right upon arrival. No more fumbling with cash or paper forms — just scan, pay, and go.
The first pilot will kick off at Terminal 2 of Cairo International Airport, with plans to expand once officials are confident the system works without a hitch.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
The meeting wasn’t just about fancy tech; it was about coordination. Airport authorities, immigration, the tourism ministry, and digital platforms are all linking arms to make sure the rollout is smooth. Minister Fathy stressed that every agency needs to work together to ensure a “fast, efficient, and smooth” experience from day one.
This push for modernizing entry isn’t happening in isolation. Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a government-wide session with ministers of Tourism, Communications, Finance, Interior, aviation officials, and tech experts.
Why the rush?
The Grand Egyptian Museum just opened, and officials expect a tidal wave of tourists. Clearly, nobody wants history-lovers stuck in lines while the Rosetta Stone silently judges them.
Digitization, Modernization, and Fewer Headaches
The new system aims to:
- Handle increasing numbers of tourists with digital efficiency
- Coordinate between all ministries for smooth operation
- Reduce waiting times at airports
- Bring Egyptian border procedures in line with international standards
Think of it as Egypt saying: “Yes, we know you’d rather be exploring the pyramids than filling forms. We got you.”
By 2026, the goal is to equip all Egyptian airports with this electronic visa system — plus an emergency visa option — making border crossings faster, more reliable, and decidedly more modern.
For travelers, this means: less time in line, more time for falafel, souks, and selfie moments in front of the Sphinx.
