Have You Ever Heard Sand Dunes Sing?

Have You Ever Heard Sand Dunes Sing?

Your headphones aren't malfunctioning, and yes, it is completely true: remote parts of Kazakhstan have sand dunes that can sing. They don’t sing light and polite, instead, they can boom, roar, and even groan like a bass guitar.

The Singing Dunes, known locally as Aigaik Kum, are a remarkable natural phenomenon located in Altyn-Emel National Park in southeastern Kazakhstan.

When Walks become an Instrument

When sand grains move and slide over each other, that is the phenomenon of “singing.” It usually occurs on steep parts of the dune during the slide. The friction that is a result of the slide produces low pitched sound waves that can resonate through the sand and deserts. The worst part is that these sound waves can be heard by other people.

People describe their experiences in varies. Some say it is silence that is broken by a muted guitar. A few poetic people say it is an entire invisible army singing a powerful song of a reignite desert. However, it is enjoyable and a little odd, especially at dusk when you are alone and it is empty.

Nature's Soundtrack

To hear the most beautiful sounds is memorable. If the sand is too dry, and the slope is too steep, the sounds will be lost. The earth will tell you if you are too close, and the sand will start to whisper, "Back up if you want to hear the most beautiful sounds the wilderness has to offer."

People living near the singing sands say they hear songs from far away from them. They say it is as if the wilderness is saying, "Tunes coming your way!"

A Symphony for the Adventurous

If you want to witness it for yourself, you’ll need:

  • Patience (Remote, and the desert isn't the most accessible place)
  • Timing (The best days to do this are dry and windy)
  • A sense of wonder and perhaps a spare pair of shoes (sand can be a little tricky)

It’s an experience every desert adventurer remembers, a deep, low hum within the dunes. It reverberates throughout your body, likely your brain as well, and echoes even after you’ve left the desert.
