GOL announces first ever Direct Flights from Rio to Europe
After more than two decades flying passengers across Brazil and Latin America, GOL Linhas Aéreas has decided it’s time to stretch its wings a little further. And by “a little further,” we mean across the entire Atlantic Ocean.
The airline has announced plans to launch its first-ever direct flights to Europe, connecting RIOgaleão – Tom Jobim International Airport with two major European cities: Lisbon Airport and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.
For travellers in Rio, this means fewer connections, less airport wandering, and far fewer moments of staring at departure boards wondering where Gate B47 actually is.
Lisbon Gets the First Boarding Call
The first route out of the gate will link Rio with Lisbon, launching 16th September 2026 with four weekly flights.
It’s a logical choice. Brazil and Portugal share centuries of history, language, culture, and—let’s be honest—a mutual appreciation for very good food and long conversations. So demand on this route is pretty much guaranteed.
Next up will be Paris, although the airline says details for that service will be announced soon. Because apparently even airlines like to keep a little suspense in their travel plans.
If you need help with your next event, incentive, meeting, conference or group to Lisbon, please

A Widebody Debut for GOL
To make the transatlantic journey possible, GOL will operate the routes with the Airbus A330, marking the airline’s entry into long-haul flying.
This is quite a milestone for a carrier that started life flying short and medium-haul routes. Moving into widebody aircraft is a bit like upgrading from a city car to a long-distance touring machine—same concept, just a lot more range and comfort.
Passengers in the Business INSIGNIA cabin will enjoy fully flat beds, premium amenities and lounge access at select airports. Which means travellers can arrive in Europe feeling refreshed instead of looking like they’ve just spent the night folded into seat 23B.
In-Flight Dining Gets a Michelin Touch
The airline has also decided that crossing the Atlantic deserves food that’s slightly more exciting than “chicken or pasta.”
Menus will be created by Brazilian chef Felipe Bronze, who holds two Michelin stars. So yes, the in-flight meal might actually be something passengers look forward to instead of politely poking with a fork.
Cargo Joins the Journey
The new flights won’t just carry passengers and very happy food lovers. Each aircraft will also offer around 20 tonnes of cargo capacity, helping expand operations for GOLLOG, the airline’s freight unit.
This move will also strengthen Rio’s role as a logistics hub linking South America and Europe.
Rio Becomes a Bigger Global Gateway
Through its base in Rio, GOL already connects more than 30 destinations across Brazil and Latin America, creating a network that will feed passengers into the new European routes.
For travellers, that means easier connections and more direct options. For Rio, it means stronger global links.
And for GOL? After years of flying around the neighbourhood, the airline is finally heading across the ocean—with a Michelin-starred meal along the way. With GOL announces first ever Direct Flights from Rio to Europe, Europe just got easier to travel to from LATAM!
