Oman Lets UAE Residents Extend Visas In-Country

Oman Lets UAE Residents Extend Visas In-Country

If you're a UAE resident currently in Oman and wondering what your options are — there's some genuinely useful news.

Oman's Royal Oman Police has quietly reintroduced in-country visa extensions for UAE residents who entered on the standard 14-day visa-on-arrival. The service, processed through the ROP Immigration Department at the Qurum service centre in Muscat, had been suspended for over a year. It's now back up and running.

How It Works

The extension adds 28 days to your stay and costs OMR 20 — roughly USD 52 — plus any applicable overstay fees if your original visa has already lapsed. Overstay is charged at OMR 10 per day, calculated from the original expiry date.

Previously, anyone needing to extend had to exit Oman — typically via the Wajaja or Hatta border crossings — and re-enter. With a lot of UAE-based residents having made their way to Muscat in recent months, those crossings have been busy. The in-country option removes that step entirely.

What You'll Need

The extension isn't automatic. The Royal Oman Police reviews each application individually, and there are a few things you'll need to have ready:

  • Proof of valid UAE residency
  • A confirmed address in Oman — hotel or residential both work
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay

Worth noting: this extension doesn't come with work rights in Oman. If you're working remotely for a UAE employer, that's generally fine, but anyone holding or needing an Omani work permit will need to go through a separate process.
One more thing to flag — only one in-country extension is being granted per person. After that 28-day period, you'd need to leave and re-enter on a new visa if you're planning to stay longer.

A Note on Tax

This one catches people off guard. Oman's emerging tax residency rules mean that staying 30 days or more in the country can trigger personal income tax reporting obligations. If you're an employer with staff in this situation, it's worth looping in your payroll provider sooner rather than later — particularly for anyone who'll be returning to the UAE before the end of the tax year. The interaction between the two countries' rules is something to get ahead of rather than untangle after the fact.

The Practical Upshot

For UAE residents who've been waiting things out in Muscat, this is a meaningful bit of relief. No border run, no third-country detour, no unnecessary stress. Just a visit to Qurum, the right documents, and an extra 28 days sorted.

It's a sensible move from Oman — and a good example of the kind of quiet, practical support that doesn't always make headlines but matters a lot to the people it affects.
