Ghana Is Launching a Free e-Visa for African Travellers

Ghana Is Launching a Free e-Visa for African Travellers Next Month
Ghana is launching its e-Visa system next month. And for African travellers, there's a more specific detail worth flagging: from May 25, the e-Visa will be free of charge.
The announcement came during a state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Accra on April 2. President Mahama confirmed it publicly during the bilateral talks, and Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs put out a formal statement shortly after to back it up.
May 25 isn't a random date. It's Africa Day, and the Ghanaian government is clearly aware of what that means symbolically. That framing is intentional — but the practical side of it is real regardless of the symbolism.
A long time coming
A lot of planning has gone into this. Ghana originally announced an e-Visa in November 2023, aiming for Q1 2024. That time frame passed without any updates. In Mahama’s State of the Nation Address in February 2026, he noted the design and procurement stages were complete and deployment would happen in 2026. May 25 turns “later this year” into something you can actually mark on a calendar.
What it means in practice
For African citizens, the e-Visa is free. The whole process is online — no consulate visit, no in-person submission. Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was clear that the free visa for Africans sits within the broader e-Visa rollout, not separate from it. Both are launching together.
It's also worth understanding what this isn't. Ghana isn't going visa-free — it's going e-Visa. The distinction matters. Pre-screening still happens, it just moves online and happens before you travel rather than at a border or consulate window. The Ministry's framing — continental integration, Pan-Africanism, tourism growth, without compromising security — reflects exactly that balance.

The bigger picture
Ghana has been building this narrative for a while. The 2019 Year of Return put the country on the map for diaspora travellers in a way that few tourism campaigns manage. A free e-Visa for African citizens is a natural extension of that — reduce the friction, keep the process managed.
Whether everything is actually running smoothly by May 25 is the part to watch. The original 2024 launch didn't happen, and these systems have a habit of being more complicated to stand up than the announcement suggests. But the political commitment is clearly there, the date is public, and if it lands as described it's a meaningful shift for travel across the continent.
If you're an African citizen planning a trip to Ghana from late May, the application will be online and free. Documentation requirements and the actual platform should become clearer as the launch gets closer — worth keeping an eye on.
