Turkey Drops Visa Requirement for Australians

Turkey Drops Visa Requirement for Australians — Effective April 17, 2026

Australian passport holders no longer need a visa to enter Turkey. As of April 17, 2026, the requirement is gone — published formally in Turkey's Official Gazette through a presidential decision and effective immediately. For tourism and transit, Australians can now board a flight to Istanbul, Ankara, or anywhere else in Turkey without completing any prior application.

It's a meaningful shift. Until last week, the e-Visa was a fixed part of the process for any Australian planning a trip. Not complicated, not expensive, but a step that had to be done — online, through Turkey's official portal, before you left home. Miss it and you'd have a problem at the border. That requirement no longer exists.

What the Rules Actually Say

Although Turkey Drops Visa Requirement for Australians the permitted stay hasn't changed. Australians can spend up to 90 days in Turkey within any 180-day period — the same window that applied under the e-Visa arrangement. What's changed is the barrier to entry, not the length of time you're allowed to stay once you're there.

The exemption applies to ordinary passport holders travelling for tourism or transit. It came into force on April 17 and there's no indication it's a temporary or trial measure — this appears to be a permanent adjustment to Turkey's visa policy for Australian nationals.

The Anzac Day Connection

The timing is difficult to separate from context. Anzac Day falls on April 25, and Turkey — Gallipoli in particular — is one of the most significant destinations for Australians marking that date. Thousands make the trip each year for the dawn service and commemorations on the peninsula. The Australian government's own travel advice specifically flags Gallipoli as a major gathering point for the occasion.

The visa change takes effect just eight days before Anzac Day 2026. Whether that timing was deliberate or coincidental, the practical effect is the same: Australians who hadn't yet sorted their travel paperwork for this year's commemorations have one less thing to deal with. For a trip that already carries considerable personal significance for the people making it, removing administrative friction — even minor friction — is not nothing.

It also sets a cleaner baseline for future years. Australians planning Anzac commemorations in Turkey going forward won't need to factor the e-Visa into their preparations at all.

What Hasn't Changed

The arrangement is not reciprocal, and it's worth being clear about that. Turkish citizens travelling to Australia still need to apply for a visa before they depart. The most common route is the Visitor visa subclass 600, Tourist stream — a process that remains fully in place on the Australian side. Turkey's decision to remove its visa requirement for Australians doesn't change what Australians require of Turkish visitors.

That asymmetry isn't unusual in international visa arrangements — many countries have one-sided exemptions in place — but it's worth knowing if the question comes up.

The Practical Upshot

For Australians, the checklist for a trip to Turkey just got shorter. No e-Visa portal, no pre-travel application, no approval to wait for. Ordinary passport, confirmed onward travel, and sufficient funds for your stay are the things that matter at the border now.

Turkey has been one of the more visited destinations for Australians in recent years — the history, the coastline, the food, and the Gallipoli connection all draw people there. Removing the visa requirement makes the country marginally easier to get to, and in travel planning terms, smaller barriers do tend to move the needle on where people choose to go.

If you've been thinking about Turkey and the e-Visa felt like a reason to put it off, that reason is gone.
