70 Million Passengers Later: What airBaltic Unlocks for Group Planners

The Latvian carrier just marked 31 years and a major passenger milestone, and for incentive buyers, the real story is how easily Estonia now sits within reach.

Anniversaries usually generate a press release and not much else. This one deserves a closer read, because the numbers behind it change what you can propose.

airBaltic turned 31 on 28 August 2026, and on the same day, the airline marked its 70 millionth passenger since founding. The carrier began in 1995 as a joint venture between the Latvian state and Scandinavian Airlines, and its first commercial flight left Riga for Stockholm that October aboard a 33-seat Saab SF340.

The Network Behind the Milestone

airBaltic now connects the Baltic States with more than 80 destinations across Europe and beyond, with operations spanning Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Twenty-six codeshare partners extend that reach considerably, giving passengers access to over 200 destinations worldwide.

That combination matters to planners: multi-market groups can converge on the Baltics without heroic routings.

Why Planners Should Care

Codeshare depth is the quiet hero here. Qualifiers flying in from North America, Asia or the Gulf can ticket through to the Baltics on a single reservation, so baggage flows through and delay protection applies without your travel manager having to piece together separate tickets.

A dense regional network also makes multi-city programs practical. Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius sit close enough to combine, and the connectivity supports staggered arrivals.

Estonia: The Baltic's Quiet Overachiever

Now for the destination that should be on more shortlists. Estonia packs medieval spectacle, forest wilderness and digital-age polish into a compact footprint.

Tallinn's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobbled lanes, guild houses, city walls and towers surviving in remarkable condition. For groups, that setting is a gift: a private dinner in a 15th-century merchant house, lit by candles and served by costumed hosts, needs almost no embellishment.

The contemporary side holds up just as well. Telliskivi Creative City turns a former industrial quarter into studios, restaurants and event spaces with real character, and Estonia's food scene has climbed steadily on the back of foraging, smoked fish, black bread and Nordic technique, with chefs here taking wild ingredients seriously.

Beyond Tallinn: Forests, Bogs and Islands

Lahemaa National Park sits under an hour from the capital, and its pine forest, boulder fields, coastal manor houses and bog boardwalks make outstanding team activity terrain. Bog shoe walking across a raised mire at sunrise is unusual, low-impact and memorable, and a sauna afterwards seals the deal.

Saaremaa island offers windmills, a bishop's castle and spa hotels for slower-paced programs, while Tartu brings university-town energy and a strong museum scene. Winter transforms everything, too: snow-covered Old Town, glogi in the square and ice-driving experiences give you a distinctive Q1 incentive option.

Your DMC Is the Difference

Estonia's best assets are private ones. Manor house takeovers, guild hall exclusivity, island logistics and forest permits all depend on local relationships, and seasonality needs handling by someone who actually knows it, since daylight hours swing dramatically and program design should work with that rather than against it.

Let our destination partners turn 70 million passenger journeys into one your delegates never stop describing.
