Fifty Nonstops and Counting: Alaska Opens Loreto to San Diego

Alaska Airlines marks 40 years in San Diego with its 50th nonstop destination, and it lands in one of Baja California Sur's quietest coastal corners.

Milestone announcements usually arrive with a cake and a photo op. This one arrives with a route worth building a program around.

Alaska Airlines is celebrating 40 years in San Diego by launching its 50th nonstop destination from the airport. The new seasonal service flies to Loreto, Mexico.

Flights begin 19 December 2026, running twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The season runs through 28 April 2027 aboard an Embraer 175 operated by SkyWest.

Alaska becomes the only airline connecting Loreto and San Diego. Tickets are already on sale at alaskaair.com.

The Numbers Behind the Milestone

Alaska offers more nonstop destinations from San Diego than any other carrier. It is also the leading airline serving Mexico from that market.

Darren Scott, Managing Director of Network, framed the launch as a thank-you to guests across four decades. The airline flew its first San Diego service on 1 December 1986.

Together with Hawaiian Airlines, the network now spans the US, Mexico and Latin America. That includes nonstop service to all four major Hawaiian Islands from San Diego.

A new lounge is planned for San Diego in 2028, set to be among the largest in the city. Mayor Todd Gloria welcomed the investment and the visitor economy it supports.

There is a giveaway too. Forty winners receive Atmos Rewards Gold status for 40 years, with one grand prize of a million Atmos Rewards points.

Why Planners Should Care

Twice-weekly Wednesday and Saturday service creates two clean program shapes. Wednesday to Saturday gives you a tight three-night reward trip with no wasted days.

Saturday to Wednesday stretches it to four nights for higher-tier qualifiers. Either way, the schedule builds your itinerary for you.

The seasonal window matters too. December through April is peak incentive season for North American programs, and it lines up with Q1 kickoffs and President's Club timing.

Regional jet capacity keeps groups intimate. An E175 suits 60 to 70 delegates well, which is the sweet spot for a top-performer trip.

Complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi for Atmos Rewards members is a small touch that lands well. Delegates arrive having cleared their inbox rather than resenting the flight.

Loreto: Baja's Best-Kept Secret

Loreto sits on the Sea of Cortez, backed by the Sierra de la Giganta mountains. Jacques Cousteau famously called these waters the aquarium of the world.

Bahía de Loreto National Park protects five islands and some of the richest marine life in the region. Whale sharks, blue whales and dolphins pass through on schedule.

For groups, that translates into serious activity programming. Private boat charters, snorkelling with sea lions at Coronado Island, and sunrise kayaking all work beautifully.

The town itself is small and walkable, built around a mission church founded in 1697. It carries Pueblo Mágico status and the pace to match.

Land-based options hold up too. Mountain biking, hiking into desert canyons, and cave paintings in the Sierra de San Francisco add range.

Golf sits at Danzante Bay, where the seventeenth hole perches above the water. It photographs like a brochure because it essentially is one.

Dining leans on the sea. Chocolate clams, fresh-caught yellowtail and beachfront long tables under string lights.

San Diego: The Bookend Worth Building In

Do not treat San Diego as a transit point. It earns two or three nights on either side of the program.

The Gaslamp Quarter delivers Victorian architecture, rooftop bars and walkable dining for evening free time. Little Italy has become the city's strongest food neighbourhood, with a Saturday market that suits group grazing.

Balboa Park gives you 1,200 acres of Spanish Colonial architecture, gardens and 17 museums. Several venues there host private events, and the setting does most of the styling for you.

Coronado sits across the bay, home to the Hotel del Coronado and a beach that consistently ranks among America's finest. Sunset sailing on the bay is an easy win for a welcome evening.

For activity programming, the options are broad. Surf lessons in La Jolla, kayaking the sea caves, whale watching in season, and craft brewery trails across a scene with more than 150 breweries.

USS Midway Museum makes an unusual and memorable dinner venue on a decommissioned aircraft carrier. Torrey Pines handles the golf brief with clifftop ocean views.

Alaska's planned San Diego lounge, opening in 2028, will add further comfort for group departures. Until then, 50 nonstop destinations make assembling a North American group here refreshingly simple.

Your DMC Is the Difference

Loreto is small, which is exactly its charm and exactly its challenge. Boat capacity, park permits and marine guide availability all need booking well ahead.

Private island beach setups and whale-watching windows depend on relationships and timing. A ground partner who knows the season gets you the good days.

Let our destination partners turn a 50th nonstop into the incentive nobody in your sector has proposed yet.
