Kampala Levels Up: Marriott's Flagship Brand Arrives in Uganda
A 277-unit twin-tower property in Nsambya brings a 985-capacity ballroom to the capital, and East African conference planners should be paying attention.
Hotel openings matter to planners for one reason. Ballroom capacity decides which bids you can realistically submit.
President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated the Kampala Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments on 27 August 2026. The ceremony included the formal handover of the hotel keys.
The property opened to guests in June ahead of the official launch. It sits on Ggaba Road in Nsambya.
Ugandan businessman Ponsiano Ngabirano owns the property under a franchise agreement with Marriott International. Ngabirano also owns the Capital Shoppers supermarket chain.
The Specification That Matters
The twin-tower complex holds 181 hotel rooms and suites. A further 96 serviced executive apartments bring total accommodation to 277 units.
Those apartments include kitchens and target longer stays. That is useful for organising committees, production crews and extended project teams.
Facilities include three restaurants, six conference venues, bars, lounges, a spa, gym and outdoor swimming pool. The largest event venue accommodates up to 985 guests according to Marriott International.
Local reporting cites a 1,000-seat conference room alongside committee rooms seating 500. Either figure puts Kampala in a different bracket for association and corporate conferences.
Why Planners Should Care
Sub-1,000 capacity is where a huge share of African regional conferences sit. Kampala can now bid for events that previously needed a different host city.
The franchise structure is worth noting too. Local ownership combined with Marriott brand standards, operating systems and global booking network gives buyers familiar procurement comfort.
Marriott already operates in Uganda under Sheraton, Protea Hotels and Four Points by Sheraton. Adding the flagship Marriott Hotels brand signals confidence in the market.
That confidence has numbers behind it. International visitor arrivals exceeded 1.64 million in 2025, according to figures cited by The Independent.
Nsambya itself works well logistically. The neighbourhood offers access to the central business district, diplomatic missions, shopping centres and major health facilities.
Uganda as an Incentive Destination
Now the part that sells the program. Uganda holds one of the most compelling wildlife propositions anywhere.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the headline. Permits are limited, the experience is intimate, and delegates describe it in hushed tones afterwards.
Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park offers a second primate experience with different energy. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds tree-climbing lions and the Kazinga Channel boat safari.
Murchison Falls delivers the Nile squeezing through a seven-metre gorge. Boat approaches to the base of the falls are properly dramatic.
For shorter programs, the Source of the Nile at Jinja sits within a comfortable drive. White-water rafting, quad biking and bungee jumping cover the adrenaline brief.
Lake Victoria supports island retreats, sunset cruises and lakeside dinner venues. Kampala itself brings craft markets, a strong music scene and a food culture worth exploring properly.

The Combination That Works
Pair a conference at the new property with a two-night wildlife extension. That structure suits association events and corporate leadership retreats equally.
Delegates arrive for business and leave with a gorilla trek in their photo library. Attendance rates respond accordingly.
Your DMC Is the Difference
Gorilla permits require advance booking and careful group allocation. So do internal flight connections to Bwindi and lodge availability during peak windows.
Ground partners handle the sequencing that makes a conference-plus-safari program feel effortless. They also manage the transfers that decide whether your schedule holds.
Let our destination partners build a Kampala program that earns the venue.
