Sweden's West Coast, Year-Round: Etihad Doubles Down on Gothenburg

Three weeks after announcing a winter route, Etihad has upgraded Abu Dhabi to Gothenburg to a year-round service. The booking data spoke loudly.

Airlines rarely change a schedule before the first flight departs. This one did, and the reason is worth reading.

Etihad Airways announced Abu Dhabi to Gothenburg as a winter route running 17 December 2026 to 21 March 2027. Three weeks later, it became a year-round service.

The upgrade follows exceptional demand since bookings opened. Demand arrived from both ends of the route.

Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, put it plainly. The market told the airline it had underestimated Gothenburg, and Etihad was glad to be corrected.

The Service Detail

Flights begin 17 December 2026 with four services a week. The aircraft is the Airbus A321LR.

The cabin configuration is unusual for a narrow-body. Two First Suites, 14 Business seats and 144 in Economy.

First and Business offer fully flat beds with direct aisle access. Economy features 13.3-inch 4K touchscreens, with high-speed Wi-Fi across all cabins.

Gothenburg is Etihad's fifteenth new destination launched in 2026. The year has added cities across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Mats Johannesson, CEO of Swedavia Airports, noted the strong regional appetite for direct Abu Dhabi connections. Companies in West Sweden can now plan around the service in any season.

Why Planners Should Care

Three-cabin service on a narrow-body is the interesting part. It brings full long-haul product to markets that previously could not support wide-body economics.

For group travel, that means premium cabins on a route that would not otherwise exist. Senior leadership travels properly, and the rest of the group travels comfortably.

Year-round operation removes the seasonal constraint entirely. Under the original schedule the route would have closed before the Swedish summer.

Connectivity is the other prize. From Abu Dhabi, guests reach Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Singapore, Hanoi, Bali, Shanghai, Taipei, Bengaluru and Colombo among others.

The Etihad Abu Dhabi Stopover program adds up to two complimentary hotel nights. That turns a connection into a program element rather than a chore.

Gothenburg: Sweden's West Coast Opens Up

Gothenburg rewards groups who like their cities human-sized. Canals, cobbled streets and a harbour heritage that shaped the place.

The archipelago is the headline attraction. A coastline of islands begins where the tram line ends, which is a remarkable thing for a major city.

Boat charters through the southern archipelago, seafood lunches on car-free islands, and swimming from smooth granite rocks. It is Nordic summer at its most photogenic.

Summer brings long, light evenings, food markets, parks and open water in the heart of the city. Winter offers Liseberg's Christmas market, glowing lights and proper fika culture.

The food scene is serious. Feskekörka fish market, oyster safaris on the Bohuslän coast, and a strong cluster of contemporary Nordic kitchens.

Haga district delivers wooden houses and cafés for a slower afternoon. Volvo and industrial heritage tours suit manufacturing and engineering client groups particularly well.

Abu Dhabi at the Other End

Abu Dhabi holds its own as a program destination. Beaches, dining, culture and entertainment sit alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island attractions.

Desert experiences, mangrove kayaking and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque round out the offer. A stopover program combining both ends is a strong proposal.

Your DMC Is the Difference

Archipelago logistics need local hands. Boat capacity, island permissions and weather contingency all sit with your ground partner.

Oyster safaris, private island buyouts and seasonal timing reward experience over guesswork. So does building an itinerary around four weekly flights.

Let our destination partners turn a route Etihad underestimated into a program nobody forgets.
