Business, Cruise, Weddings: Malaysia Narrows Its Multiple-Entry Visa
Since 1 September 2026, Malaysia's MEV is limited to 31 nationalities and four travel purposes. Business travel survives the cut, which is the headline for planners.
Most visa tightening stories worry corporate planners. Read this one closely and you will relax slightly.
Malaysia has changed eligibility for its Multiple Entry Visa. Since 1 September 2026, access has become significantly more restricted.
The Malaysian Immigration Department states the MEV will no longer be available for all nationalities. It is now limited to 31 eligible nationalities.
Travel purpose is restricted too. Only four categories now qualify.
The Four Approved Purposes
The MEV is now available for business, Fly and Cruise, medical treatment, and wedding tourism. Fly and Cruise covers travellers combining air travel with a cruise.
Regular tourism, vacations and ordinary family or social visits no longer qualify. Those travellers will generally need a Single Entry Visa, depending on their nationality's rules.
This is already visible on the official MyVISA e-Visa portal. Select an eligible nationality and the multiple-entry option, and only those four categories appear.
Which Nationalities
Authorities have not yet published a named list of the 31 nationalities. However, Malaysia's system lists exactly 31 nationalities under its e-Visa framework.
That list includes Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan and Colombia. It also covers Serbia, Montenegro and a substantial group of African nations.
On 4 September 2026, travel-document experts from VisasNews and Action-Visas ran test applications through MyVISA using those 31 nationalities. In each case the form allowed MEV selection and displayed only the four approved purposes.
The match between the announced figure, the portal list and the form's behaviour strongly suggests these are the eligible nationalities. Formal country-by-country confirmation would remove any remaining uncertainty.
Validity Has Not Changed
The announcement does not mention changes to validity or length of stay. MyVISA continues to describe the electronic MEV as valid for up to six months from issuance.
Maximum stay remains 30 days per entry. The September changes affect who qualifies and why, rather than how long they can stay.
Why Planners Should Care
Business travel remains an approved purpose. That is the crucial detail for anyone running corporate programs, conferences or incentive trips.
Multi-market qualifier programs need a closer look though. If your Nigerian, Indian or Sri Lankan attendees were travelling on a leisure-purpose MEV, that route has closed.
The two-part test is simple. Applicants must hold one of the 31 eligible nationalities and travel for one of the four approved purposes.
Fly and Cruise is an interesting inclusion. Malaysia clearly wants cruise-linked itineraries, which opens ideas for planners building sea-and-shore programs.
Travellers who separately qualify for visa-free entry remain subject to their own nationality rules. Most Western passports fall outside this change entirely.
Malaysia Remains a Strong Group Proposition
Kuala Lumpur delivers a striking skyline, deep hotel stock and conference capacity that handles large events comfortably. The Petronas Towers still stop a group mid-sentence.
Food is the destination's superpower. Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan traditions overlap in a way few countries can offer.
Street food trails through Jalan Alor, hawker centre challenges and Nyonya cooking classes all suit group formats. Batu Caves adds colour and scale within easy reach.
Penang brings George Town's UNESCO-listed shophouses, street art and one of Asia's finest food scenes. Boutique heritage hotels there suit smaller executive groups.
Borneo changes the register entirely. Sabah offers orangutan sanctuaries, Mount Kinabalu, diving at Sipadan and rainforest river safaris.
Langkawi handles the beach reward leg, with island-hopping, mangrove kayaking and resort capacity for full buyouts.

Your DMC Is the Difference
Visa nuance across a mixed-nationality group is exactly what ground partners exist to manage. So is briefing attendees on the correct application route.
Private access to heritage venues, Borneo permits and island logistics all run on relationships. Let our destination partners handle the detail and build the program around it.
