All Aboard the Silk Road: A Tourist Train Links Xi'an and Almaty

Some incentive trips are measured in flight hours. The truly memorable ones are measured in landscapes.

A special tourist train has arrived in Almaty after departing Xi'an. The journey crossed northwestern China and Xinjiang before entering Kazakhstan at Khorgos.

The route follows the path of the ancient Silk Road. Centuries ago, those same corridors linked China with Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

This was the second operation of the service this year. Kazakhstan's national carrier ran its first departure on the route in June 2026.

How the Service Came Together

The route was first introduced by the Chinese side in 2025. It forms part of efforts to expand tourism connections between the two countries.

Passenger Transportation JSC manages passenger services within Kazakhstan. The train runs on a specially prepared timetable covering border checks and railway coordination.

Khorgos plays a central role as the crossing point. The route shows how rail infrastructure can recreate historic connections as a slower, immersive travel experience.

Why Planners Should Care

Rail journeys solve a problem many incentive programs share. The travel days feel lost.

On a train like this, the journey becomes the program. Changing scenery, shared meals and conversation between carriages build group cohesion naturally.

Private charter potential is the real prize. A dedicated carriage or full train for a senior leadership group is a proposal few competitors can match.

Themed rail journeys also photograph exceptionally well. For clients who value storytelling in their post-event content, that matters.

Two confirmed operations this year suggest growing momentum. Planners who move early will have the most influence over future departures.

Xi'an: Where the Silk Road Begins

Xi'an is one of China's most historically significant cities. It served as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road for centuries.

The Terracotta Army sits just outside the city, thousands of warriors standing in formation. A private early-access visit before public opening sets the tone for the whole journey.

The city walls are among the best preserved in China. Cycling their full circuit at sunset is a group activity that everyone remembers.

The Muslim Quarter delivers street food at full intensity, from hand-pulled noodles to lamb skewers. It is a fitting prologue to a journey heading west.

Almaty: The Journey's Grand Finale

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and a major tourism hub. Arrival programs showcase its cultural identity, historic sites and mountain setting.

The Independence Monument tells the story of Kazakhstan's national history. The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen surrounds important heritage sites.

Ascension Cathedral is one of the city's most recognised landmarks, a colourful wooden structure of remarkable craftsmanship. The Central Mosque reflects Kazakhstan's religious and cultural traditions.

The Central State Museum offers depth for groups who want context. Kok-Tobe delivers panoramic city views by cable car.

Shymbulak sits in the Tian Shan mountains above the city. Ski runs in winter and alpine walks in summer make it a year-round asset.

Beyond the headline sights, Almaty rewards curiosity. Green Bazaar, a lively café culture and Big Almaty Lake's turquoise water all suit group programs.

Charyn Canyon lies within a day trip, a red-rock landscape often compared to the American Southwest. A canyon-rim lunch makes a striking closing experience.

Your DMC Is the Difference

Cross-border rail programs require careful choreography. Border timing, onboard catering, carriage allocation and arrival transfers all need local expertise.

Charter arrangements, private museum access and mountain venue bookings run through relationships. So does coordinating two countries' worth of ground logistics seamlessly.

Let our destination partners turn a Silk Road rail journey into the program your delegates talk about for decades.
