Tanzania's $44 Travel Insurance: What Group Planners Need to Know
Every safari program has a line item nobody enjoys discussing. This week, that line item got some detail.
Mainland Tanzania published the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 on 4 September. They appear in Government Notice No. 256.
The rules set out how mandatory travel insurance will work for foreign visitors. What they do not yet include is a start date.
What the Regulations Say
The premium is set at the Tanzanian shilling equivalent of $44. Cover lasts up to 92 days from arrival and allows multiple entries during that window.
Visitors can buy the policy before travel or at the point of entry. Insurers must issue a certificate and policy, either electronically or on paper.
Minimum cover spans four areas: emergency medical treatment, emergency medical evacuation, emergency repatriation, and loss of baggage. Specific limits and exclusions will appear in each policy.
The National Insurance Corporation, Tanzania's state-owned insurer, sits at the centre of the scheme. Other registered insurers may take part in partnership with it.
The requirement applies to arrivals by air, sea or land. Visitors covered by the rule who arrive without valid insurance may be refused entry.
Who Is Exempt
The regulations exclude residents of East African Community Partner States and Southern African Development Community Member States. The wording refers to residents, not nationals, which is a detail worth noting.
Travellers from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and elsewhere outside those groups should expect the requirement to apply. It sits alongside existing visa or e-Visa rules.
Nothing Changes Today
Publication is a major step, but travellers do not currently need to buy this cover. The regulations do not specify when enforcement at the border begins.
The next announcement should confirm the launch date and the online purchase process. Verification arrangements should follow too.
The Zanzibar Question
Zanzibar has required its own visitor insurance since 1 October 2024. That policy comes from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation and also costs $44 per adult for up to 92 days.
ZIC documentation states its cover is valid in Tanzania during the insured period. However, the mainland regulations specify a policy issued by NIC or its partners.
No mutual recognition mechanism has yet been announced. For a combined safari and Zanzibar program, two scenarios exist.
Either the authorities agree mutual recognition, or travellers buy both policies at $88 in total. That figure is possible, not confirmed.
Why Planners Should Care
This is a budgeting question, not a reason to rethink the destination. At $44 or $88 per head, it barely registers against a luxury safari program.
The practical move is simple. Build $88 per delegate into 2027 costings as a safe assumption.
If mutual recognition arrives, you hand back a small saving. Clients tend to enjoy that surprise.
Pre-purchasing cover for the whole group before departure keeps arrival day smooth. Nobody wants a queue at the border after a long flight.
Timing matters too. British Airways launches Gatwick to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar from May 2027, which makes this exact combination far more popular.
Why Tanzania Remains Worth Every Dollar
Paperwork aside, Tanzania is one of the finest incentive destinations on earth. The Northern Safari Circuit alone justifies the trip.
The Serengeti hosts the Great Migration, a spectacle that silences even the most seasoned executives. Ngorongoro Crater delivers the Big Five inside a UNESCO-listed caldera.
Tarangire's elephant herds and baobabs make memorable game drives. Lake Manyara adds flamingos and dramatic escarpment views.
Luxury tented camps turn evenings into highlights. Bush dinners under lanterns and sundowners on the kopjes rarely disappoint.
Zanzibar supplies the reward leg beautifully. Stone Town's carved doors, spice plantation tours and dhow sailing at sunset all suit groups.
Villa buyouts and private beach dinners on the Indian Ocean close a program on exactly the right note.
