The festival is celebrated annually every May in El Kelaâ M'Gouna, a town with in the stunning Dadès Valley of the astounding High Atlas Mountains, and is one of the most celebrated festivals in Morocco. This festival celebrates and commemorates the moon's harvest of the Damascus rose (the rose that is the basis of rose water, essential oils, and that expensive perfume you a shamefully sat and sniffed for 30 seconds in the duty-free store). At this festival, the rose and its products are not mere products, they are a whole way of life.

The main focus of the festival is the ceremonial harvest of the rose and the hereditary traditions that stem from generations of Berber families that have been culturing these Roses.
