Medieval Festival Giostra del Saracino 2026

Medieval Festival Giostra del Saracino 2026 - A Renaissance Spectacle (With a Little Extra Adrenaline)
Date: 20th June, 2026|Arezzo, Italy
If you’ve ever wondered what medieval Italians did for entertainment before streaming services existed, the answer is surprisingly energetic. They dressed up, chose a district, and charged full speed at a spinning Saracen with a lance. Welcome to Medieval Festival Giostra del Saracino 2026, Arezzo’s most dramatic (and competitive) tradition.
Every June, the stunning Piazza Grande turns into a living Renaissance painting. Cobblestones become a battleground, trumpets echo through the square, and over 300 costumed participants parade through the city looking like they’ve stepped straight out of the 13th century—no CGI required.
The Grand Parade (Because Drama Is Required)
Before the knights ever come near a horse, an epic historical procession launches festivities. Shaking a flurry of flags at overhead cars, flag wavers execute breathtaking feats of athleticism, drummers pound out the thunderous rhythm and noble figures float around the square as if they’ve drilled for this one day all year. Spoiler: they have.
It’s dramatic, colorful and just a little bit over-the-top — which is to say, it feels very Italian.

Four Districts, One Square,No Mercy
Giostra del Saracino is driven by hard town pride. Each of Arezzo’s four quarters — Porta Crucifera, Porta del Foro, Porta Sant’Andrea and Porta Santo Spirito — provides two knights for battle. Friendships are temporarily paused. Bragging rights are very, very much at stake.
Meet the Enemy: Buratto of the Saracen
The knights’ nemesis is not another human — but no less dangerousfor that. Buratto, the Saracen figure that spins just behind it, waits at the end of the track brandishing a shield — and a swinging arm aiming to whack you one if your timing is off.
The goal? SMASH the shield full speed runts over! Miss your mark once, and Buratto will gleefully remind you who’s in charge.
Precision Over Power
This isn’t about brute force. Scoring is razor thin, and in many cases victories come down to just one point. One millimetre here or there can be the difference between district infamy for all time and a lot of listening to it next door.
More Than a Tournament
More than a competition, Giostra del Saracino is a love letter to the history of Arezzo. The event, dating to the 13th century, is all about tradition and rivalry — but perhaps most important (and least medieval): how to wrap a kind of athletic competition in the customs of an Old World village.
One thing is clear: When the lances fly and the crowd roars, you’re not just watching the Renaissance, you are experiencing it.
