Fête de l'Escalade 2026

Fête de l'Escalade 2026 - A Celebration of History and Unity
Dates: 11th - 13th December 2026.
Location: Geneva, Switzerland.
Festival and Fair in Geneva. The Fête de l'Escalade is a lively festival in December, where a traditional market along with the street performances makes everyone excited on Rue du Mont-Blanc. It's an homage to a defense of the city against attack by the Duke of Savoy's men in 1602. What was then a historical event has since turned into a joyful gathering of townspeople and visitors. Coming up to Fête de l'Escalade in 2026, the spirit of solidarity and history looks stronger than ever.
A Historic Tradition
One last note worth sharing, is the history behind Fête de l’Escalade – Fête de l’Escalade remembers a time when Genevan citizens protected their city from an attack. The term "Escalade" derives from the scaling of the city walls by the Duke of Savoy's troops, an act which failed when confronted with the brave and faithful opposition of Geneva's defenders. In 2026 the tradition will be revived and many events over two days will commemorate its history.

The Celebratory Atmosphere
The streets of Geneva come alive every December for the Fête de l'Escalade, a colourful celebration of historical folklore. In 2026, the same festive atmosphere will be in store, costumes a plenty, parades on every corner and modern history reenactments. According to legend, it was in the harbor here that workers revolted on April 7, 1620.Today, costumed citizens march through the old city to re-enact events that took place more than 400 years ago. It’s a chance for the locals as well as the weekenders to experience Geneva’s wealth of culture.
The Symbolism of the Marmite
The “marmite,” a large pot of vegetable soup, has become one of the key symbols of the Fête de l’Escalade. Local lore has it that a another local woman, Mère Royaume poured hot soup from such a pot on invaders as they scaled the city walls. Today, you can buy chocolate “marmites” (cauldrons), filled with marzipan vegetables and during the festival it has been tradition to break these cauldrons.
Family-Friendly Events
Fête de l’Escalade offers something for all ages. So, while the history of the celebration is pertinent to every edition of 2026, once again we have a broad range of activities for families and children! Whether storytelling sessions reenacting the events of the siege or hands-on workshops enlightening children to Geneva’s medieval past, there is something for everyone. It is a festival that brings people together with their family and friends to celebrate the events of Purim.
Celebrating Unity and Pride
More than simply historical reenactments, Fête de l'Escalade 2026 is about honouring what unites and defines Geneva. The festival reinforces the idea of solidarity and mutual support that were required for a city to survive its adversities hundreds of years before. It’s an example of how people can be brought together in times of crisis, a message that still rings true even now. Whether partaking in the torch-lit procession or savouring the festive markets, there’s a real feeling of camaraderie.
Culinary Delights
The Fête de l'Escalade celebrates Geneva’s traditional local food. Along with the well known chocolate marmites, the visitors will also have opportunity to taste different traditional dishes such as vegetable soups, sausages, pastries and many other. In addition, street vendors and local restaurants have special menus that reflect the culinary riches of the region. Nowhere but the 2026 iteration of the tournament should we find a broader selection of great things to eat: It’ll be a gourmand’s dream.
This Is Why the Chocolate Industry Celebrates Fête de l'Escalade
For those working in the travel industry Fête de l'Escalade is a chance to promote Geneva as a cultural destination.
