Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca 2027

Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca 2027

Dates taking place: 6th - 14th February 2027.

Location: Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, Argentina

The festive spirit of the people of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, and the combination of ancient customs and traditions with breathtaking mountain landscapes, live music, and avalanches of confetti can only mean one thing: the Quebrada de Humahuaca 2027 Carnival. One of the most beautiful valleys in the country, is filled with mountainous Andean villages, transformed into beautiful makeshift homes for overflowing celebrations of dance and song and beautiful costumes. The Andean do World Heritage carnival and the UNESCO valleys transform into the most beautiful open air party in the world for the Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It is here, amidst the drum music, brilliant costumes, and food, that the unforgettable location of the event is created, and where no one is an observer of the event.

Where the mountains throw the party

Tourists visiting the Quebrada de Humahuaca find its enormous multicoloured (golden, red, and pink) mountains most intriguing. Usually, visitorsare stunned while looking at the mesmerizing beauty. However, when accompanied by festivities, the valley is turned into a stage by the small towns of Humahuaca, Tilcara and Purmamarca. They begin their parades complete with marching bands, dancers, and a Ku Klux Klan-like crowd throwing handfuls of flour and confetti.

The Quebrada de Humahuaca Carnival of 2027 combines old world and new world customs by mixing indigenous Andean with Spanish carnival traditions. The end result is the blending of two extremes, primitive and modern. The most distinctive event of the festivities is the annual ritual of "unearthing the carnival devil" figure, known as Pujllay. Because this mischievous character is dug-up to initiate the festivities, it serves as an “unofficial” signal to the valley that things are going to get downright crazy.

Controllable Chaos: Dancing and Music

With the start of the festivities, music comes alive on the street corners. A brass band passes the village, and, as if without order, the spectators and participants dance next to the band and begin to move forward, sideways, spin and repeat. Traditional Andean music and modern rhythms, and soon the whole village is dancing.

Food is, of course, part of the experience. During the festivities, a variety of regional delicacies will be between dance breaks, like empanadas, locro, and lots of desserts. It is an event where a person gives you food, then a person gives you a drink, and all of a sudden you found yourself in a parade you didn't even know you were in.

And of course, in any of the carnivals, there is an aspect of playful madness. Water, balloons, foam, flour, confetti, and everything is valid. Visitors should embrace the mess, because once they are in an event, refusing to get dirty is not an option. Position yourself to be as equally festive as everyone else at the end of the day.

Living Tradition

What makes the Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca 2027 so unique is the passion local communities have for the event. Not only have families participated for generations, but many of the artisan costumes and folkloric dances have regional historical and Andean ritualistic significance. Most importantly, the event is extremely welcoming for participants and attendees.

Unlike many parades, where performers and spectators stand at opposing ends, the locals will actively invite participants to join the parade.

Active community participation, along with the combination of culture, relaxation, and spirit of the event makes the Carnival of Quebrada de Humahuaca so unique. It is one of the events where you can invite the participants and attendees to visit several times.
