The Ancient Festival Behind the Splash
Long before buckets, and water guns to the armed, water festival was a heavy festival of importance. Ancient Armenia, and importantly the worship of Astghik (love and water). In this festival people poured water in one another. Symbolizing purification, and renewal.
The water festival was later merged by the Armenian church with the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. With the merging of the festivals, the water-throwing fun tradition was carried through time, and history.

Water Fight Festival in Yerevan
Every year Yerevan hosts a special festival that attracts a number of local and international tourists that lasts from morning to evening. For that short period of time Yerevan becomes a water fight zone. People bring buckets, water guns and hoses to after the fight. Water Fights, as the fight zone is known, becomes an active water fight zone. Children and parents fight, friends attack each other from balconies and even the police engage in the fights.
Individuals with white shirts are never to be seen in the active fight zone, as the shirts will be ruined from all of the water. Yerevan will also see the closure of some of the streets as the police will ensure that no one fights in their area.
A Festival Everyone Can Attend
Tickets are never needed for this festival and clothes do not have to match. Festivities are meant to be spontaneous and unplanned. Water is an unspoken requirement and is seen as a source of collaboration among everyone.
