Celtic Connections 2027

Celtic Connections 2027
Dates taking place: 14th – 31st January 2027
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
January gets a bad reputation. Fairly, mostly. The decorations are down, the good intentions are already showing strain and the weather has settled into the particular grey persistence that January in the west of Scotland does better than almost anywhere. Nobody is pretending this is the best month. Glasgow in January is not a hard sell on meteorological grounds.
And then Celtic Connections arrives and Glasgow in January becomes, for eighteen days, one of the best places in the world to be.
Celtic Connections 2027 runs from the 14th to the 31st of January — folk, roots and world music across more than three hundred events in venues throughout Glasgow. It has been running since 1994 and has grown from a modest celebration of Celtic musical traditions into one of the premier folk and roots festivals on the planet. The kind of festival that serious musicians want to play and serious music lovers plan their January around. The kind that makes the grey weather entirely beside the point.
Which it is. Entirely beside the point.
The Music, Which Is the Whole Point
Celtic Connections is not a narrow festival. The name suggests Celtic — and the Celtic traditions are there, central and celebrated, the fiddles and the pipes and the songs in languages that predate the borders currently drawn around them. But the festival has always understood that roots music is a global conversation rather than a regional one and has programmed accordingly.
Folk from across the British Isles. Traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia. Roots music from West Africa, North America, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean. World music that reflects the full breadth of what music sounds like when it comes from somewhere specific and means something to the people who made it. Jazz. Blues. Singer-songwriters who fit no category comfortably and are the better for it.
The collaborations are where the festival earns its particular reputation. Musicians brought together specifically for Celtic Connections — combinations that don't exist anywhere else, that produce something that could only happen here, in this festival, in these eighteen days. Those concerts are the ones that get talked about. Those are the tickets that go first.

Glasgow Does This Well
Glasgow is not a city that requires a festival as justification. It is one of the best music cities in Britain — a claim it has been making with increasing confidence for decades and backing up with the venues, the audiences and the scene to support it. Celtic Connections fits into Glasgow like something that was always supposed to be there. Which it was.
The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is the festival's main home — a proper concert hall for the bigger nights, the headline acts, the moments the festival has been building toward. Around it, venues across the city fill with music. Bars, clubs, theatres, arts centres — the programme spreads through Glasgow in the way that good music festivals spread through cities that are built for music. Which Glasgow is.
The late-night sessions are their own thing entirely. Informal, intimate, the kind of musical conversation that happens when the concert is over and the musicians are still going because they haven't finished yet. These are the moments that people come back to Glasgow in January specifically for and that no programme note ever quite prepares you for.
January in Glasgow, Which Is Fine, Actually
The weather is what it is. Pack accordingly — a coat that means it, layers that deliver and the general understanding that January in the west of Scotland is not operating on your behalf meteorologically. The city compensates with the other things. The warmth of the venues. The particular Glasgow friendliness that is genuine rather than performed. The food, which has been improving steadily for years and is now good enough that dinner before a concert is a reason in its own right.
Glasgow in January during Celtic Connections has an energy that the month does not otherwise produce — the city animated by music and the people who travel for it, the venues full, the late nights justified, the grey outside made irrelevant by everything happening inside.
It is, genuinely, one of the better eighteen days the calendar offers. January included.
For DMCs and Incentive Planners: The January Answer
January is a difficult month for incentive travel. The post-Christmas flatness, the budget reset, the general sense that the year needs a reason to begin. Celtic Connections 2027 is that reason — a world-class music festival in one of Britain's most characterful cities. Running for eighteen days with enough programming flexibility to accommodate most group schedules and enough musical breadth to bring a group together regardless of individual tastes.
For travel professionals, Glasgow in January during Celtic Connections is a genuinely underused proposition. The city is accessible, the accommodation is good, the festival provides the cultural programme and Glasgow provides everything around it.
For incentive groups, eighteen days of world-class folk and roots music in a city that knows how to host it produces the shared experience that good incentive travel aims for. The late-night sessions do the rest — the informal, unplanned, genuinely musical moments that nobody scheduled and everyone remembers.
January in Glasgow. Celtic Connections. Better than the month deserves and exactly as good as the city always was.
