Mid-Autumn Festival 2027

Mid-Autumn Festival 2027
Dates taking place: 15th September 2027
Location: Hong Kong
It’s one thing to hear a festival described as magical, but it’s another thing to describe one as fairy tale-like. That’s the case with the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. It’s at its best, with a full, glorious moon. This festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. This festival is also one of the oldest. There will be mooncakes to gobble, legends to be heard, lanterns to be lit, and a full moon shining bright enough to be able to read a book under it light. 2027 is the best year to experience it as it will be my first time!
What Is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
The festival has the longest history of all Asia’s festivals, spanning over 3000+ years. It’s origins can be traced back to the ancient rituals of harvest and worship of the moon. It focuses around a reunion of the family to express gratitude. In order to do so, families come together, mooncakes are shared, and lanterns are lit. There is a popular legend that is associated with the festival. It’s one of a Moon goddess Chang’e that lives on the moon. It’s a romantic story that also adds an interesting touch to the festival.

Mooncakes deserve their own heading
Mooncakes have become the edible symbol of the whole festival, with their intricate designs, and dense, pastry-like texture. Their fillings can include lotus seeds, red beans, salted eggs, and other more modern alternatives. In Hong Kong, the sport of the festival is mooncake exchanging. These beautifully packaged mooncakes can be gifted to friends and coworkers, and some modern mooncakes can include chocolate or matcha. Don't be surprised, though, if you consume a lot of mooncakes over the festival.
What goes on at the festival?
For Mid Autumn Festival of 2027, Hong Kong will go all out. In Victoria Park, thousands of paper lanterns will be placed in the different various shapes to make a sea of lights.
