Samhuinn Fire Festival 2026

Samhuinn Fire Festival 2026
Dates: 31st October 2026
Location: Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland
There are Halloween events. There are a great many Halloween events. Most of them involve pumpkins and costumes purchased in October and discarded in November. And then there is Samhuinn — an ancient Celtic festival marking the turning of the year from summer to winter, performed on the Royal Mile on the 31st of October by the Beltane Fire Society with fire, drumming, theatre and the kind of atmosphere that Edinburgh's Old Town produces when the occasion is extraordinary and the occasion is allowed to be extraordinary.
Samhuinn is not a Halloween party. It is the thing that Halloween came from. The distinction matters and becomes immediately apparent the moment the drumming begins.
Samhuinn Fire Festival 2026 takes place on the 31st of October on the Royal Mile. The ancient Celtic new year — the moment when the boundary between the living world and the spirit world was at its thinnest, when summer relinquished its hold and winter arrived — marked with processions, fire performance, theatrical ritual and the particular quality of a crowd gathered in a medieval street on a cold October night watching something genuinely ancient made immediate.
It has been performed by the Beltane Fire Society since 1992. It has never once been described as ordinary.
What Actually Happens
The summer king falls. The winter king rises. The ritual of seasonal transition — the ancient Celtic understanding that the year has two halves and the movement between them is significant and worth marking — is performed on the Royal Mile with fire performers, drummers, theatrical characters and the procession that moves through the Old Town carrying the turning of the year through Edinburgh's most historic street.
The fire is real. The drumming is real. The performers have prepared for this. The Beltane Fire Society is not a casual organisation — it is a community of performers who take the tradition seriously and bring to Samhuinn the commitment of people who understand what the festival is and what it requires.
The atmosphere builds as the procession moves. The crowd follows. The Royal Mile in the dark on the 31st of October with fire and drumming and theatrical performance moving through it is not an experience that photographs fully capture. It is not an experience that descriptions fully capture either. It is an experience that requires being there.
If you need help with your next event, incentive, meeting, conference or group to Edinburgh, please
Edinburgh's Old Town. On the Right Night.
The Royal Mile on Samhuinn is the Royal Mile doing what the Royal Mile was built for — providing the stage for something significant in a city that has been staging significant things since the twelfth century. The castle at one end. The palace at the other. The medieval buildings on either side. The October dark above everything.
Edinburgh's Old Town at night in late October has a quality that summer visitors don't encounter. The stones are older in the dark. The closes and wynds that branch off the Mile feel deeper. The castle above everything carries its weight differently when the season has turned and the night has arrived at five o'clock and the fires are lit.
Samhuinn uses all of this. The Old Town is not the backdrop. It is the event's natural habitat. The festival and the place were made for each other and have been demonstrating this on the 31st of October since 1992.
The Beltane Fire Society
The Beltane Fire Society began Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill in 1988 and added Samhuinn to its calendar in 1992. It is a community organisation — performers, artists, volunteers who dedicate significant time to producing events that honour Celtic traditions with theatrical skill and genuine commitment.
The quality of the performance reflects this. Samhuinn is not a commercial Halloween event assembled for tourism. It is a living cultural tradition maintained by people who believe in what they are doing and do it with the craft that belief produces.
The performers in 2026 will be there because they want to be there. The audience will feel this. It changes the experience in a way that is difficult to quantify and immediately apparent.
For DMCs and Incentive Planners: Halloween Done Properly
For travel professionals, Samhuinn Fire Festival 2026 is the October event that answers the question clients didn't know they were asking. Not Halloween as costume party. Halloween as ancient Celtic tradition — fire, drumming, theatrical ritual on the Royal Mile of one of Europe's finest cities on the one night of the year that Edinburgh's Old Town was made for.
Build it into an Edinburgh October programme — the Old Town, the castle, the whisky, the restaurants, and Samhuinn on the 31st as the centrepiece that no other city and no other date provides. The combination of Edinburgh in autumn and Samhuinn on Halloween is specific and unrepeatable. No other destination offers it. No other festival provides it.
For incentive groups, Samhuinn delivers the shared experience that the best event-based travel produces — the moment that the group is in together, that produces the same response across different people, that generates the conversation at dinner that continues well past the point where dinner is usually finished.
The drumming starts. The fire begins. The summer ends and the winter arrives on the Royal Mile as it has arrived on the 31st of October since 1992.
Some nights are worth travelling to Edinburgh for. This is one of them.
