White Night 2028 - Contemporary Culture Forum

White Night 2028 - Contemporary Culture Forum

Dates taking place: September 2028 (exact dates to be announced)

Location: Various venues across Riga, Latvia

Most cities go to sleep at a reasonable hour. Riga, in September 2028, has other plans.

White Night 2028 — or Baltā Nakts, as the locals call it — is Riga's beloved contemporary culture festival, and it is exactly what it sounds like. One extraordinary night where the city's museums, galleries, public spaces, courtyards and streets throw open their doors, turn up the lights and invite everyone in. Free of charge. Until dawn. The whole city becomes the venue, and the programme is as eclectic, surprising and quietly brilliant as the city itself.

An Open All Night Gallery

Amidst the art nouveau buildings and Soviet-era cultural centres, White Night 2028 finds the hidden gems and the most breathtaking spaces in all of Old Town. They consist of medieval courtyards, contemporary art spaces, and all of Riga. White Night is a time to rise and break free from constraints, to have fun and encounter the unexpected. Each of the spaces in the White Night festival is their own art space and house to art created and curated by fellow artists. There are installations, performances, and live music. Even the White Night festival creators are invited to participate and come prepared with their own art to share and showcase.

White Night is as exciting as it is mysterious. You could easily wander into a factory and not be able to leave because the sound art is so immersive. There is a daytime concert in a hidden courtyard, and all day people have been stopping in their tracks to gawk at a rooftop projection. The restriction of time and the limitations that come with it are all lifted, the entire 12 hours is the greatest exhibition in all of Riga. The festival is a massive collective art installation, and each visitor is the artist.

Riga, Which Deserves More Credit Than It Gets

Latvia's capital is one of Europe's most underrated cities — and people who know it tend to say so with the quiet satisfaction of someone who found a brilliant restaurant before it got reviewed. The Art Nouveau architecture is genuinely world-class, the food scene has quietly grown into something excellent, and the creative community punches well above its weight for a city of its size.

September is Riga at its most beautiful. The summer crowds have thinned, the light turns amber and golden, the temperatures are comfortable and the city has a particular energy — thoughtful, alive, not trying too hard — that makes it wonderful to explore on foot.

White Night amplifies all of that. The city stops being a backdrop and becomes the experience itself.

Why Travel Professionals Should Be Taking Notes

For DMCs, incentive planners and cultural travel specialists, White Night 2028 offers something increasingly valuable — a shared experience that is free, open, walkable, genuinely surprising and completely impossible to replicate anywhere else.

Build it into a Baltic itinerary alongside Tallinn and Vilnius, or make Riga the centrepiece of a standalone cultural city break. Either way, White Night gives groups a natural focal point — an evening that requires no agenda, no dress code and no pre-briefing, just curiosity and comfortable shoes. Clients who think they know European city breaks will leave quietly reconsidering everything.

One night. An entire city. No bedtime.
