Riga Photography Biennial 2026

Riga Photography Biennial 2026
Dates taking place: 16th April – 3rd July 2026
Location: Riga, Latvia
There are art events that fill a gallery. And then there are art events that fill an entire city. Riga Photography Biennial 2026 is firmly the second kind — a sprawling, ambitious, occasionally startling celebration of contemporary photography that spills out of exhibition halls and into the streets, public spaces and unexpected corners of one of Europe's most architecturally beautiful capitals.
Running for over two months across venues throughout Riga, this is not a single afternoon's commitment. It is an invitation to see — really see — both the art and the city hosting it.
Photography That Asks Questions
The Biennial brings together photographers from Latvia, the wider Baltic region and internationally, united by a shared theme that shifts with each edition. The work ranges from documentary and portraiture to conceptual and experimental — the kind of photography that makes you pause mid-step, lean in and quietly rearrange something in your thinking.
Exhibitions are spread across galleries, cultural centres, former industrial spaces and open-air installations. Riga's famous Art Nouveau architecture provides an involuntary backdrop to all of it, which frankly helps.

Riga Does the Heavy Lifting
It would be difficult to choose a better city for an extended photography festival. Riga is visually extraordinary — layered, textured and full of the kind of light that Baltic summers do particularly well. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Art Nouveau district contains the highest concentration of that architectural style anywhere in the world. The food scene has quietly become one of the most interesting in Northern Europe.
Two months gives you genuine flexibility. Come for a long weekend in April when the city is shaking off winter. Return in late June when the days stretch almost indefinitely and the terraces are full.
Why Travel Professionals Should Frame This One Carefully
For DMCs, incentive planners, and cultural travel specialists, Riga Photography Biennial 2026 is for you. Program offers a timeframe of mid-spring to early summer, a spacious opportunity for creating group experiences. Integrate time to visit exhibitions with walking tours to appreciate the architecture of Riga, or plan time to visit the pine-covered beaches of Jūrmala, or go to explore Latvia's broader cultural scene, and you’ve got a meaningful itinerary.
This is the type of trip that can excite clients whose interest is less with the destination and more with the collection of experiences. Clients that return with inspiring ideas and wonderful photographs, that’s almost guaranteed with a trip to Riga in the summer.
