AfrikaBurn 2028

AfrikaBurn 2028

Dates taking place: April - May 2028

Location: Western Cape, South Africa

Imagine trying to explain to a co worker what the holiday you're planning is. "So I'm going four hours into the South African desert, I'm bringing my own provisions, I'm sleeping in a tent, and there are absolutely no bars, shops, or wifi," What would they think? Probably something like this.

And when you show them a photo from AfrikaBurn 2028, your coworkers frustrated and asking for a ride.

What is the Event?

AfrikaBurn is the answer to South Africa's mini Burning Man which is also mini and a little crazy. It is a week-long event of the artistic community in South Africa to gather, design, and build to ultimately be used to ignite radical self-expression and creativity in the midst of a desert. It has been annually held at the Quaggafontein property within the Tankwa Karoo and about 200 km above Cape Town since 2007.

It's about 100% artistic temporary self-community. Thousands of participants construct a short-lived city and everything is a donation. As a gift, food and drinks are at your desired donation. It is a stark contrast to the real-world currency.

Art That Is Beyond Imagination

Art takes on a whole new meaning at AfrikaBurn. They are not small temporary installations. They are large ambitious sculptures. The sculptures are made using material found on-site, and even in urban areas. These can be entire interactive environments. The desert can be transformed into a place resembling another dimension. At the end of the week, sculptures are ceremoniously burned. The entire thing can cause a cathartic experience, and can be the most spectacular thing you will ever see. The collective experience is a wonderful thing. Generosity knows no bounds.

Mutated Cars, Theme Camps, and You

These sculptures are called Mutated Vehicles. These art cars are legal to drive on the road, but that is just the beginning. One is a jellyfish, another a spaceship. Some provide deep house music while you lounge. Some cars also provide drinks. They roam Tankwa Town (the temporary city) and stop anywhere personally asked. Participants also create Theme Camps, small neighborhoods of hospitality within the larger city that provide a wide range of services from coffee at dawn to dance floors at midnight.

What to Expect on the Ground

Get ready for the heat and the chill with some serious dust exposure daily. Bring a minimum of five liters of water and pack a whole bunch of supplies and gear. Bring your sunscreen and a bicycle, and literally every other character trait you possess and unleash them. Bring your fanciest of fancy fancy dress, costume, or regular attire. It’s all created to be accepted and appreciated, nobody will care and nobody will care if you come in costume or if you come bare!
