Arts Festival Makhanda 2026

Arts Festival Makhanda 2026

Dates taking place: 25th June - 5th July 2026.

Location: Makhanda (Grahamstown), Eastern Cape, South Africa

South Africa has its share of wonders; world-class wine, stunning landscapes, and awesome bray culture. Winter in Eastern Cape’s Makhanda offers an experience that is probably the most underrated of its offerings. An experience that not only captivates the attention of the country region but the entire continent as well. The Makhanda Acts Festival celebrates its 52nd offering and like the rich undertones of a Stellenbosch red wine, the offering matures and offers a good measure of jazz and a significant dose of interpretive dance.

What To Expect at the Festival

If you have never been there, imagine eleven days of theatre acts, dance and music performances, live music, done music, visual art exhibitions, talks and workshops, art, craft, and food fairs. There will be eleven more historical tours spread throughout the town. Nearly 50,000 festival-goers pack the town and its 200 or so staged art performances; ranging from a 200-plus year old Anglican cathedral, to a 2000 square meter outdoor stage built in the town square and to street performances that share their stage with a not so impressed pigeon. Makhanda’s Arts Festival is the largest in Africa, and one of the largest in the world.

New Talent This Year

The 2026 edition will demonstrate new talent. For more than 40 years, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards have launched the careers of South African artists and will spotlight five winners this year. They are Gabi Motuba (jazz), Jason Jacobs (theatre), Bronwyn Katz (visual arts), Ndumiso Manana (music), and Lee-ché Janecke (dance). Each of them will create their own festival work. In addition to the carefully selected curated main festival program by Artistic Director Rucera Seethal and her team, and the vast and varied Fringe festival, there is the Programme For The Unforeseen, the festival program you stumble upon and which invariably contains the highlight of your festival experience.

More Than A Festival

The Arts Festival Makhanda 2026 is beyond entertainment. It is of vital importance to the economy of this region. The festival has had a massive economic impact of more than R131 million on the province of the Eastern Cape and has provided employment for more than 1,600 community members of Makhanda since 2022. It has a children's arts festival, a community outreach program which takes performances to hospitals and the surrounding rural areas, and a youth program in which youth are taught juggling and acrobatics, as well as valuable life skills. So yes, everyone is a winner by merely showing up and eating a boerewors roll at the festival.

Why You Should Book Now

This is an especially unique event, and Makhanda is unlike any other place in South Africa. It is cold in late June, but buzzing and alive in a way you need to see for yourself to understand. You won't have to wait too long to see the full program, but after it drops on 12 May 2026, tickets will be gone in the blink of an eye. Art enthusiasts, culture curious travelers, and people who thrive being around other people in the cold and enjoy watching the extraordinary will want to be a part of this.
