Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2027
Dates taking place: November 2027 (Dates TBA)
Location: Goychay, Azerbaijan
Wine, cheese, truffle festivals and all sorts of other strange fermented fish, and now adding to that list is the Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2027 in Goychay. The entire town becomes a massive ruby red shrine to this single fruit. If you have never thought about travelling to central Azerbaijan in late October for the sake of a pomegranate, allow this article to do so for you.
Nar Bayrami: What Should You Care
Nar Bayrami, or Pomegranate Festival, started in 2006 and was added to the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020 indicating it is not your average local event, and it's for the fruit that is the King of Fruits in Azerbaijan. Pomegranates are everywhere in Azerbaijani culture, from folk music, from poetry, from numerous carpet designs, to pomegranate flavored jams. Goychay is home to all 67 different variations of pomegranates, and that's more pomegranate varieties than most of the world would have ever thought about.

What Goes on at the Festival
Surprisingly, there is quite a lot. The schedule has events like concerts, dances, plays, and even a magic show (theater magic in the pomegranate festival). There are themed parties and games like the famous pomegranate juice squeezing competition and pomegranate eating competition. They are chaotic and sticky, but the most fun to participate in. Local farmers exhibit their catch, and guests are able to taste the pomegranate varieties with names like Veles, Shirin, Gyuleysha, and Shisbaba. Each name has s subtle flavor that local farmers can recognize. The festival ends with a grand closing concert that features a wonderful fireworks display, the best way to send off a fruit.
Not Only For the Pomegranates
The Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2027 is an opportunity to explore some of the most colorful aspects Azerbaijan has to offer beyond just pomegranates. The residents of Goychay organize weeks in advance of the festival, painting fence and decorating the main square. This brings an almost carnival-like atmosphere to the town, and piques interest of outside visitors. There are stalls where pomegranate wine or jam and hand-crafted ceramic pomegranate ornaments are sold. There are also displays of products dyed using pomegranate skin, which is a technique used in traditional Azebijani carpet making. The pomegranate has great significance in Azerbaijan, where it is a symbol of love and her richness, and appears throughout the country’s poetry and myths (and carpet weaving). The festival attracts many, and is known for pomegranate juice stains on cloths or shirts.
