Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2028

Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2028

Location: Goychay, Azerbaijan

Dates taking place: November 2028 (Dates TBA)

Poems, prophecies, and romance: the Pomegranate festival is a prestigious example of the former fruit-centric fests that take place around the world. Celebrated in Goychay, Nar Bayrami (as the locals call it) inducts the simple pomegranate into rockstar status through concerts, competitions, and (literally) tons of fruit. Not to mention the abundance of pomegranate wine to quench your first and second fruit-related relationships.

Why Goychay

To be the best among the rest is a fun fact to impress your friends with when you happen to be the only region on earth that grows every single one of the 67 known varieties of pomegranates. The area’s only microclimate and soil is the reason Goychay is the pomegranate capital of the world, and the locals have fully understood and embraced this status. Streets and fences are repainted for the festival (almost the whole city is getting dressed up). Very lovely and a bit infectious.

What Really Goes On

The Pomegranate Festival Azerbaijan 2028, which takes place over the course of two weeks from late October to early November, celebrates the pomegranate’s harvest season with a variety of themed games and competitions. These include entertainment such as a pomegranate eating contest, a pomegranate juice squeezing contest, a concert, and a fireworks display. There’s even a competition to find the largest pomegranate; in the last festival, the winning pomegranate weighed in at a staggering 1.3 pounds. There is even a pageant to find the next Pomegranate Girl!

If these competitions don’t satisfy your entertainment needs, then perhaps shopping will. Vendors sell all kinds of handmade pomegranate products including jams, pomegranate wine, narsharab sweet sauce, and ceramic pomegranates. The Pomegranate Festival even features a museum; if its name didn’t already suggest, it is a museum all about pomegranates! It is located in Goychay, and fun fact, it is the only pomegranate museum in all of the world! I can assure you that after you visit the world’s only pomegranate museum you will have a newfound appreciation for this lovely fruit!

A Festival With UNESCO Credentials

Nar Bayrami is a fruit festival that UNESCO has recognized in its lists. Since 2020, UNESCO describes this festival as an important means of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity community. The UNESCO description is intriguing: The pomegranate in Azerbaijan symbolizes productivity and abundance as well as love and eternal passion. The cultural significance of the pomegranate is represented in Azerbaijani’s wall hangings, carpets, poetry, and culinary specialty. This festival is not a mere food festival, but a cultural phenomenon. Attending this festival, one can witness the remnants of an ancient civilization, and the festival is filled with the joy of eternity.
