Guess where - a disappearing lake in the desert

Do you know where this is? A place where from January to June, shimmering blue lagoons sparkle between the dunes… but by October they vanish, leaving only sand behind - until the next season calls them back again.

Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil: The World’s Most Flirtatious Desert

If deserts had dating profiles, Lençóis Maranhenses in northeastern Brazil would definitely be the one sending mixed signals. At first glance, it looks like a classic desert: vast waves of blinding white sand dunes, stretching all the way to the horizon. But then, between January and June, this “desert” casually fills itself with turquoise-blue lagoons so dazzling you’d swear someone photoshopped the place. Just when you’ve fallen in love with its sparkling waters, October comes along and—poof!—it ghosts you, leaving behind nothing but sand and broken hearts.

Locals will tell you that Lençóis isn’t actually a desert at all, because it rains a lot here. Picture millions of gallons of tropical rainwater pooling into dips between the dunes, creating lagoons so perfect they make infinity pools look insecure. These oases become natural swimming holes where you can splash around like a kid, or, if you’re feeling more glamorous, strike your best influencer pose and pretend you “just happened to stumble across” one.

But beware: Lençóis Maranhenses has a short attention span. By October, the lagoons evaporate like a magician’s disappearing act, leaving only empty bowls of sand. It’s nature’s version of a seasonal Netflix show—spectacular when it’s on, but gone without warning until the next season’s premiere.
