Just imagine it: a room full of participants from all over Europe, practicing the art of HEMA and the skills of sword fighting with longswords. These people have dedicated their time to studying the ancient manuals of medieval combat, then, they recreated the techniques. Why Tyrnhaw 2028 is One of a Kind
Tyrnhaw is no joke. This tournament is completely serious with massive pools of competitors, qualified referees, and oversight from the Slovak Federation. Competitors know Lichtenauer from Fiore, and the fighters are skilled. The competition itself is fierce while the spectacle is captivating. Winners get their names inscribed onto the Tyrnhaw Steel Wheel of Fame. Statues are not allowed, so it is as close as it gets to making a permanent mark on history. No pressure.
Three categories define the main event. Longsword Men has 126 competitors from across Europe. Longsword Women has 24 fencers that will destroy perceptions biases about historical combative arts. Rapier and Dagger has 24 competitors and the most refined and elegant stabbing. Watching history come alive is an understatement when there is modern first aid and scorekeeping.

Beyond the Blades
Tyrnhaw 2028 promises swordplay entertainment and more. This two-day event includes tournaments and open sparring, with the former scheduled for Saturday and the latter for Sunday. The Sunday sparring represents the more friendly function similar to a pick-up soccer game that follows a World Cup match. The difference, of course, is that more steel and padding are involved in sparring as opposed to soccer.
What adds to the enjoyment of this year's Tyrnhaw is the historical charm of the city in which the event is held. Trnava, located in the Slovakia region, is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. This makes it the ideal location for an event that focuses on medieval combat.
