Format and Scope of Competition

The most important annual tournament in South America is the Copa Libertadores, which started in 1960 and is nicknamed the Champions league of South America. It had originally began with only the champions of each CONMEBOL nation, but it now has 47 including preliminary and group stages.

The 2026 World Cup will pick up where the last World Cup left off and continue with the same structure with 32 teams competing in the 1st group stage with 8 groups of 4 teams each and the top 2 from each group entering the knockout stage and concentrating on the final which will be single-elimination and at a neutral site as the last several tournaments to increase the stakes and excitement to the game as if it were a final of a World Cup tournament.

Key Teams and Dominant Nations

Argentina and Brazil have won so many Libertadores cups and tournaments that they have prestiged the tournament with almost 50 cups combined. Games and rivalries from the clubs like Boca Juniors and River Plate in Argentina and Flamengo and Palmeiras in Brazil have extended and popularized the tournament to the world.

Broadcasting and Streaming Availability

Fans wanting to catch all the action for Copa Libertadores 2026 will have plenty of options to broadcast and stream. In the United States, BeIN Sports has exclusive broadcasting rights until the end of 2026. BeIN Sports en Español and the streaming services Fanatiz and fuboTV will also have coverage, serving as the tournament's US audience and providing a tailored broadcasting option for the large Spanish-speaking tournament audience.
