Marathon des Sables 2027

Marathon des Sables 2027 – You Said You'd Come Back. The Desert Remembered.

Dates taking place: April 2027 (exact dates to be announced)

Location: Sahara Desert, Morocco

Maybe you watched someone else do it in 2026 and spent the rest of the year quietly certain you could. Maybe you did it in 2026 and have been telling the story at dinner parties ever since with the kind of casual understatement that fools absolutely nobody. Or maybe you've had the tab open since last spring, hovering over the registration button, waiting for a sign.
Consider this the sign.

Marathon des Sables 2027 returns to the Moroccan Sahara this April. Same desert. Same brutal, brilliant, borderline-unreasonable concept. Approximately 250 kilometres across six stages, in heat that will redefine your understanding of the word warm, carrying everything you need to survive on your back. The organisation provides water and a tent. The rest — the kit, the calories, the mental fortitude — is entirely your department.

The Desert Doesn't Do Repeats

For returning competitors — and there are always returning competitors, which tells you something — Marathon des Sables 2027 is not the same race twice. The route changes every year. New terrain, new challenges, new opportunities to discover previously uncharted reserves of stubbornness somewhere around kilometre 180.

The dunes are different. The plateaus shift. The long stage — that one, the infamous one — arrives again with the same quiet menace it always carries, regardless of how many times you've told yourself you were ready for it. You will manage. Everyone manages. It simply takes everything you have, which is rather the point.

For first-timers, the learning curve is steep and the rewards are proportional. Nothing about the Sahara in April is comfortable. Everything about finishing is.

Still the Same Tent. Still the Best Part.

Six nights in a shared tent with strangers who will not be strangers by day two. This is, according to almost everyone who has done it, the part that stays with you longest — longer than the distance, longer than the heat, longer even than the blister that shall not be named.

Rehydrated meals eaten with genuine enthusiasm because hunger is a remarkable seasoning. Conversations that start with kit talk and end somewhere considerably more honest. The collective, unspoken understanding of a group of people who have voluntarily chosen to be uncomfortable together and are finding, somewhat to their surprise, that it suits them.

The Sahara strips things back. The tent is where you discover what's left. Invariably, it turns out to be more than you expected.
April in the Sahara, Again

Days above 50 degrees. Nights that turn cold enough to make you grateful for that extra layer you nearly didn't pack. A landscape so vast and so indifferent to human drama that it becomes, paradoxically, enormously clarifying.

The training, the obsessive packing lists, the long weekend runs in full kit that your neighbours have been watching with quiet concern — all of it leads here. To a start line in the Moroccan desert in April, surrounded by people from forty-odd countries who have made the same improbable decision you have, and who are all, without exception, absolutely certain they're ready.

Most of them are. You probably are too. Pack the blister plasters anyway.

For Travel Professionals: Still the One That Stands Apart

For DMCs, sports travel specialists and incentive planners, Marathon des Sables 2027 is still in a category of its own. Clients don't browse this event — they commit to it, usually after a long period of quiet deliberation and at least one conversation with someone who's already done it. By the time they come to you, they know what they're doing. What they need is someone to handle everything around it brilliantly.

Pre-race acclimatisation in Marrakech. Kit logistics. On-the-ground support. A post-race programme that eases the transition back to civilisation gently — because arriving back in a city after six days in the Sahara is, by all accounts, a genuinely disorienting experience that benefits from a good hotel and an excellent meal.

For corporate incentive groups, the 2027 edition offers the same thing the 2026 one did, and the one before that — an experience so far outside the ordinary that it resets the group entirely. Colleagues who finish a desert ultramarathon together don't just have a shared memory. They have a shared reference point for what they're actually capable of. That tends to be useful long after the tan has faded and the blisters have healed.
