Highland Games 2027

Highland Games 2027

Dates: May – September 2027 (dates TBA)

Location: Nationwide, Scotland — including the Cowal Gathering, Dunoon

Some things improve with repetition. The caber toss is one of them — not the throwing itself, but the watching. The second time you see a competitor lift a caber the size of a telegraph pole and throw it end over end with the casual authority of someone who has been doing this since childhood, you appreciate it differently. You know what's coming, you watch the approach and you understand the technique before the throw. And then it goes over and lands at twelve o'clock and the crowd reacts and you react with them and it is, still, exactly as good as the first time.

Highland Games 2027 runs from May to September across Scotland — dozens of gatherings in towns, villages and castle grounds doing what Highland Games have done in this country for generations. Heavy athletics, piping competitions, Highland dancing, the particular festivity of a Scottish summer crowd in a field that has been enjoying this specific kind of afternoon for longer than anyone present can remember.

New to it in 2027 or returning for another summer — both are correct. The Games accommodate both without adjustment.

The Heavy Athletics, Still Requiring Explanation

The caber toss for the people who haven't encountered it yet — a large tree trunk, balanced vertically, run with and thrown end over end for angle rather than distance. It is scored on clock position with twelve o'clock being perfect, achieved by competitors who make it look easier than it is by a considerable margin.

The hammer throw. The stone put — a stone rather than a metal ball, thrown for distance, named with the directness that Scottish athletics has always preferred to unnecessary complexity. The weight over the bar, raised until it isn't. The sheaf toss, which involves a pitchfork and a bundle of straw and an athletic tradition that started in the fields and has never entirely left them.

Each event has its own logic, its own technique, its own competitors who have dedicated themselves to it with the commitment of athletes who have chosen a discipline that the rest of the world is still in the process of discovering. The Heavy Athletes at a Highland Games are not novelties. They are serious competitors doing serious things in a tradition that has been producing serious athletes for a very long time.

The piping competitions run alongside all of this. The Highland dancing runs alongside all of this. The crowd eats and watches and occasionally attempts to explain the scoring to someone nearby with varying degrees of accuracy. The afternoon is excellent regardless.

The Cowal Gathering, Still the Largest in the World

Late August in Dunoon. The largest Highland Games on the planet — several thousand competitors, one of the biggest pipe band competitions anywhere. The full range of heavy athletics at the highest level, a crowd that fills the Cowal Peninsula for the weekend and approaches it with the enthusiasm of people who either know exactly how good this is or are about to find out.

The ferry from Gourock across the Clyde is still part of the occasion. Arriving somewhere by water still improves the arrival. The Cowal Peninsula in late August is still beautiful in the way that west coast Scotland in late summer manages without effort. The light, the water, the hills behind Dunoon doing what Scottish hills do in August, which is look exactly right.

The Cowal Gathering in 2027 will be the Cowal Gathering. Which is to say — the largest, the most concentrated, the fullest expression of what a Highland Games is when it is operating at maximum scale. For first-timers, it is the obvious starting point. For returning visitors, it is the obvious reason to come back.

The Smaller Games, Which Are Also the Answer

The village and small-town games have a quality that the Cowal's scale cannot provide and is not trying to. Birnam, Crieff, Inveraray — gatherings that fit a field and a community and nothing more and are exactly right for that reason. The Braemar Gathering in September on Royal Deeside has the Royal Family traditionally in attendance.

A Highland Games in a Scottish village on a Saturday in July with the mountains behind it and the pipe band tuning up and the caber laid out on the grass waiting for the competition to begin is one of those afternoons that is entirely specific to Scotland. You cannot have it anywhere else. Scotland produces it in quantity across five months and it is excellent every time.

For DMCs and Incentive Planners: Five Months of Options

For travel professionals, Highland Games 2027 is the Scottish summer programme that builds itself. May to September. Dozens of gatherings. Every scale from the Cowal's world-record attendance to the village games that belong entirely to their community and receive visitors with the easy warmth of places that are glad to share something they are rightly proud of.

The Cowal Gathering for groups that want scale and spectacle — the pipe bands, the heavy athletics at full competitive level, the full Highland Games experience in one place over one weekend. The smaller games for groups that want something more intimate — the found-rather-than-packaged quality that experiential travel chases and that a village Highland Games provides without effort or arrangement.

Combine either with the Highlands, the islands, the whisky distilleries, the castles and the long Scottish summer evenings that justify staying longer than planned. Build a programme around a specific gathering or use the season's flexibility to fit the Games into whatever Scotland itinerary makes most sense. Either way, a Highland Games in summer 2027 provides the kind of afternoon that clients describe as genuinely Scottish rather than generically touristic.

The caber will be tossed. The pipes will play. The dancing will be better than the casual observer expected and the heavy athletics will be more technical than they look. The afternoon will be excellent. The summer is long.

Come and watch.
