Tyrnhaw 2027

Tyrnhaw 2027

Dates taking place: October 2027 (Dates TBA)

Location: Trnava, Slovakia

We've got to have a chat. The purpose of this communication is to clarify the delightful nuances of sword fighting. Real sword fighting. Real sword fighting that could actually be described in the same breath as theater and brawling. As a love letter to sword fighting, I present to you Tyrnhaw 2027.

Tyrnhaw is in Trnava, a beautiful Slovakian city. Tyrnhaw is, in essence, the Glastonbury of HEMA events. There will be no mud, no glaringly awful bands, and definitely no kale. Instead, there will be HEMA, and HEMA is Historical European Martial Arts, which is the result of extensive study of combat materials for the purpose of deciphering medieval knight fighting prior to the interpretations of Hollywood, and, of course, the fight itself in simplistic terms.

Tyrnhaw 2027 Has Everything

Unlike the majority of Central Europe longsword tournaments, Tyrnhaw 2027 will undoubtedly be the biggest. There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators in an arena that is 5 times larger than your average longsword tournament. You will be witnessing sword fighting in the words of the HEMA martialists. It is going to be strange, terrifying, and, above all, an elite (i.e. an e-leet?) sword fighting tournament.

You're going to get a lot of action in the pools. Every fight is refereed by a member of the Slovak Fencing Federation, so no disputes about calling who hit who first. Adjudication is final and recordings are kept.

The Steel Wheel of Fame

The Tyrnhaw 2027 tournament does have a medieval theme to it, which is reflected by the Steel Wheel of Fame. Unlike other tournaments which give a winner a trophy, the Tyrnhaw 2027 tournament lets winners get their name engraved onto a wheel. An actual wheel. Made of steel, which makes it cooler than the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Plus, you have to fight to get it, and you can’t get mentally hit to earn it (unlike other tournaments).

Because of this, the tournament is given a noble environment. Historically, your name is engraved onto a wheel of history. Not only are you adequately defeating your opponents. Previous winners are nervously judging you which is even mentally crippling, but silent judging ultimately decides you are ready. Plus, you have silently earned it and you know you can’t hit (mentally). There are no other tournaments like this with that in history.

Beyond Combat

Tyrnhaw has something no other HEMA events offer—Sunday workshops and sparring sessions. After the main tournament on Saturday, the sessions provide the ultimate networking opportunity. The networking is a bit different from standard events—the main difference being that networking is done while different companies poke different people with blunted edges. In the sessions, you learn some new techniques, hone your skills in a comparatively relaxed setting, and meet people with a similar love for historical combat with whom you can make friends from various countries.

Also included in the lineup of events is a different event for different types of divisions, including a men’s and women’s division of longsword, as well as a division of rapier and dagger. No matter your preference, if Renaissance fencing is your preference versus the more medieval longsword use style, then you have presented something for everyone.

Catering to Your Clients

Medieval combat in a historical Slovak city—Tyrnhaw 2027 is a superb incentive trip for traveling team-building workshops. No more trust exercises—head to HEMA sty in Trnava and watch your team have the time of their lives. With guaranteed networking thanks to the high level of medieval participants, your clients will be all a quiver to have you plan the next medieval excursion.
