The Comrades Marathon 2027

The Comrades Marathon is legendary and unlike any other marathon -- and it makes most marathons seem like a walk in the park. South Africa's Comrades Marathon is 90K, and in 2027, the brutal, but beautiful, marathon will bring over 90K competitors from over 90 nations. If you are a seasoned ultra-runner, you are familiar with the marathon. And, if you are in the latter category and a little curious about the history of this great race, it will get in your skin.
The race is about 89KM and is from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. The race alternates in direction every year. In 2027, it will also alternate. Though it alternates in direction, every competitor will deal with five infamous inclines. While the 2027 Comrades Marathon has a generous 12 hour cutoff, the competitors will soon realize it isn’t enough as the race’s difficulty becomes evident with its infamous 70KM.
Where the Comrades Began
The founder of the Comrades was Vic Clapham, a World War One veteran who originally wanted to honor soldiers who fell in battle, and in doing so promote brotherhood. Over the decades, the Comrades has come to represent much more than a Comrades ship, and the numbers reflect it. In just the first year, the Comrades saw 34 entrants. Today, the Comrades sees 20,000 entrants. The Comrades continues the tradition of crying finishers and orange breakfasters. The Comrades has survived a pandemic, two world wars, and a million blisters.
