Midmar Mile 2027

Location: KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Midmar Dam
February brings delightful excitement to one of the dams in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. Participants such as weekend warriors, determined grandparents, and even some who may have signed up for a fun dare make the annual pilgrimage to the Midmar Mile. The goal? Swim a mile in Midmar Dam. For the 54th time, July of 2026 will welcome over one thousand swimmers to the largest open water swim event on Earth (that's not just South Africa–that's the WHOLE WORLD per the Guinness World Record certifications).
How The Mile Became So Special
At first glance it seems simple enough. Swim 1 mile, and you're done. The Midmar Mile, however, challenges all common sense and narrows down the definition to an entirely different interpretation. Because of how the dam fills with rainfall, it's no guarantee that you won't be knee-deep in mud on your way to the first deep edge at the start that you're supposed to swim the first 200+ meters. Naturally, the Midmar Mile has it's own unique charm; there's no reason for world records to be boring and dignified.
The distance is about 1.6 km. Due to the amount of participants, this event spans two days. There are elites trying to get top finishes and first time swimmers participating for the experience. Olympic medalists have raced here, as well as people who've learned to swim within the last six months. The combination of the many many nerves, as well as goggle related fumbles make this a unique event, and what gives this event such a charm.

A South African Tradition Since ‘74
This event has been going on since ‘74, to put that in perspective, this event has seen plenty of governments, fashions, and countless of years of swim costumes. Besides the obvious thrill of jumping into a fresh water body of water in the middle of summer, what keeps swimmers coming back is the community. Swimmers of all kinds come with their families, charities even form relay teams. The event is so packed there is more of a family reunion type atmosphere than that of a sporting event.
The Charity Relay Challenge, held on February 11 and 12, 2027 are opportunities for organizations to make and swim for a cause. Take a leap in the water for charity and have the best time doing so.
Having an Amazing Location
KwaZulu-Natal is an extraordinarily nice place. Even before the race starts, you begin to feel the calmness and beauty of the area. The green hills, warm air, and the beautiful sky help you to cleanse the nervous thoughts that float through your head before the race. After the race is the best part.
