Which one are you? One who enjoys the pretty side of Caspian Sea, or one who jumps into the sea because they think they can swim 1.9 km there? If you are in the latter group, you have found your kind. You have found your race and possibly your new favorite city. Baku 2026 is the first Iron man qualification race to come to this part of the world. For those of you who have never been to Baku in the summertime, its 21-26 degrees celsius weather (August) is the perfect in between of too hot to function and too cold to get out of bed.
A Race That Starts at Noon (Because Why Not)
Most races have you out of bed before sunrise, but not in Baku. because the race starts at noon, you can finally have a proper breakfast and get to the start line mostly intact. You get a view of the Caspian Sea, and finish with a sunset in Baku Boulevard. That is not everything. This race finishes with a concert. Baku city is not done with you yet. You get to finish the half triathlon, and then the city throws a party for you.

Swim, Bike, Run at an F1 Circuit
The entire course is pretty spectacular. The swim is a single 1.9 km loop in the protected waters of Baku Bay, starting from Bayil Burnu. The conditions are calm and easy for beginners. The transition area is in the park of the State Flag and the Crystal Hall. The 90 km bike course, which is 2 loops, crosses the Azerbaijani countryside, the highly visible Bibi-Heybat Mosque, coupled with flat, fast stretches, and just enough cubic miles of rolling hills to keep your legs honest. Finally, the run. This is three loops through the harbor waterfront, totalling 21.1 km, which weaves past the Old City's ancient walls, and along surprisingly, the F1 Baku Grand Prix circuit. Although you will be slower than the cars, that's fine because you're doing a triathlon.
Baku Itself Is Worth The Trip
Beyond the race, Baku is genuinely surprising. It's a city of contrasts with its medieval Old City that is juxtaposed with new flame-shaped skyscrapers, a buzzing restaurant scene and incredible architecture. Its coastal boulevard is more of a river rant than you'd expect, and they have hosted Formula 1, Eurovision, and now IRONMAN Baku 2026! Not a bad city for most Europeans being completely unaware of its location. Consider this your wake-up call to get traveling!
