Starting in 1935, Growing Over Decades

Fossavatnsgangan’s first iteration took place on April 22nd, 1935, and included only 7 competitor skiers. The modest competition featured an 18 km route which 7 participants battled it out on. Despite its humble beginnings, the event has transformed over the years monuments of Iceland’s skiing history. It is notable that this race type has never been cancelled due to a lack of snow which goes to show the region’s dependable winter weather.
