Cultural visit to the Hadzabe bushmen

Spend the day with the Hadzabe people, ancient hunter-gatherers who inhabit the land near Lake Eyasi, a gorgeous soda lake that’s part of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, and witness their unchanged, traditional way of life and harmony with the earth.

Accompanied by an ranger, guests have the opportunity to engage with the Bushmen and learn all about their time-honoured hunting techniques, survival skills, food preparation and cultural norms. A veritable step back in time, this is an undeniably authentic cultural journey into rural Tanzania that reveals the untold world of these charismatic people.

Amongst the world’s last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes inhabiting the scrubby bushland, Hadzabe men search for food alone, and return home with golden honey, sweet fruit, or hearty wild game when, and if available. Women go out in large groups and forage for bright berries, baobab fruit, and tubers, depending on availability. In the rainy, wet season, sweet honey is the main staple of their diet along with colourful fruit, tubers, and sometimes meat.

Adjusting their diets to the seasons this tribe are incredibly skilled, selective and opportunistic seekers and searchers. They have only themselves to rely on to feed their families and tribe

DMC Review

Somak Safaris - WOW!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the incredible few days you organised to see Lake Manyara and the Serengeti last week. We loved every minute of it - seeing the incredible waterbirds in the floodplains at Lake Manyara (even in the pouring rain!), peering over the rim into the vastness of the Ngorongoro Crater, and experiencing the horizon-to-horizon savannahs and breathtaking landscapes of the Serengeti (not to mention 20 different lions and 9 cheetahs in two days!)

Thank you, especially, to Dianna and Maureen, for their flexibility amid all the changes we made at short notice to our itinerary - we are so grateful for your attention to detail.

Our guide, Estomih was attentive and experienced - he got us into the best spots for photos at sightings, and was so flexible when we wanted to stop and see more (for example taking us to a Masai village - an unforgettable experience).

We will strongly consider using Somak Safaris for bookings to East Africa in the future.

Well done to Somak Safaris, Tanzania

"A very quick mail to express my gratitude to your team in Dar es Salaam. The on the ground crew (Urvi, Edgar etc) were just incredible.

We put them all under a huge amount of pressure with very last minute payments and ever changing information and last minute changes – they took it all in their stride and did it all with a smile.

Really, they were just out of this world and we would not have been able to pull this all off without them. You can be very confident about sending people to them, they will be looked after well.

We’ve left with wonderful memories and colleagues that became family."
