Events in Senegal

Senegal is a pulsating place for culture and merry making. Very often, what goes on here may seem like an intricate blend of traditional customs, songs and dances signifying the country’s rich heritage. To make these celebrations lively, they are filled with mbalax music melodies as well as dressed in bright coloured clothes.

Most of these events coincide with important cultural or religious dates; one of the most important ones is the Grand Magal of Touba where millions of pilgrims come each year. Another highlight in this regard is St Louis Jazz Festival that not only presents international talents but also musicians from the city itself in a historical background.

It is hard to choose which events we should publish. We are trying to include all the main ones, but if you would like to see another event added, please let us know at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We add events on a continuous basis. So if you want to stay informed of the latest information, please bookmark this page.

Additional Events in Senegal

Tabaski

Tabaski which means Eid al-Adha is another significant religious festival celebrated in Senegal. It is observed throughout the country by Muslims as a remembrance to Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son due to his obedience to God. At this time families meet for prayers and spend time eating together with those who may be less fortunate than themselves. This occasion is marked with great piety and happiness all over Senegal since it is also a period of deep thinking about our lives, acts of charity and encouraging unity among all people living here.

Dak'Art – Biennale of Contemporary African Art

The Dak’Art – African Contemporary Art Biennale happens every two years at Dakar city in Senegal. This has been an important platform where exhibitions by African artists have been shown globally since its first edition in 1990 (Enwezor). The event holds main exhibitions and many more outside galleries; workshops plus conferences geared towards promoting African art worldwide through debates about it (Enwezor 28). Apart from celebrating creativity and heterogeneity across contemporary African art, Dak'Art encourages cultural osmosis amongst diverse ethnic groups (Oguibe 134).
