Sri Lanka is known for its thriving culture and deep-rooted customs. The celebrations in this country are a mix of history and religion like no other place on earth. There is no shortage of color in the events that take place here; everything from the Kandy Esala Perahera which pays tribute to Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relic, to Sinhala and Tamil New Year with its vibrant music, dancing and traditional rites.

Many festivals feature street parades, masked dances and pounding drums that create an energetic atmosphere filled with joy. The Vesak Festival celebrates the birth enlightenment death of Lord Buddha by illuminating lanterns all over the island while decorating temples too.

Kandy Esala Perahera

The Kandy Esala Perahera is one Sri Lanka’s biggest cultural events held during late July or early August each year. It lasts for ten days in total at a city called Kandy where it was made as an act towards showing respect Buddhism has gained there overtime represented by keeping Sacred Tooth Relic safe since it arrived centuries ago. Dancers dressed up traditionally accompanied by drummers fire eaters walk alongside beautifully adorned elephants through streets lined with thousands of spectators. This festival represents religious depth people have always had in this region along side their rich cultural background attracting both locals as well as tourists alike who come to witness such amazing sights themselves.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Every April sees the Sinhala & Tamil New Year being celebrated across Sri Lanka which marks end harvest season traditionally considered time when families come together games are played food shared etc . Houses get cleaned out new clothes put on everything necessary done so as welcome year ahead hence ensuring good luck prosperity will follow suit throughout 12 months following that day itself . Kiribath (milk rice) amongst other sweetmeats prepared only during festive occasions are consumed this period people also carry rituals aimed at bringing about wealth success peace unity among others thereby creating a sense of belongingness not only between Sinhalese and Tamils but everyone living here.
