CARNAVAL DOMINICANO

Like every country that bears the mark of carnival, so too the Dominican Republic. Every moment in February, every corner of the country explodes with the celebratory colors of la fiesta. The fiesta is known and is most popular in La Vega but takes place in almost all the cities in the country. People engage in the dance dressed in festive masks and costumes accompanied by the melodious tunes of merengue and bachata. It is celebrative, colorful, stakes are high and unity among dominicans is combined with elements from african roots and the weight of the colonial domination by spain.

Día de la Altagracia

Every January 21st, the Dominicans pay tribute to the Virgen de la Altagracia who is known as the spiritual guardian of the dominican Higuette. Many devotees and tourists offer their prayers at the Basilica of Higüey as a way to commemorate that important day. It’s also an opportunity for them to celebrate their familial and other relatives who share the same religious and cultural belief that is still practiced in the Dominican Republic as this event has a huge significance in their lives. Families come together to worship in church, eat together and socialize.
