Explore the mysterious alleys of old Amman

Join Jordanian Street Blogger Abeer Nammari on this fascinating glimpe of Amman. Here you get to discover the charms of the underground Downtown Amman routes.

You experience the amazing fusion of history, culture and art.

Al-Balad is the downtown area of Jordan's capital city, Amman. It is also the oldest part of the city and dates back thousands of years. Did you know that  It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world? Amman was built over ancient ruins and archeologists think that in ancient times it was right near to the now mostly-dry Amman River.

In 1994 there was an excavation project, during which homes and towers were uncovered, believed to have been built around 7000 BC, during the Stone Age. New archaeological excavations are ongoing in 2020.

There are a large number of historical sites in old Amman:  Amman Citadel with the Umayyad Palace, the Hashemite Plaza with the Roman Theatre and the Odeon, and the Roman Nymphaeum.
