A Food Tour Through Warsaw (With Lots of Carbs, Vodka, and… More Carbs)

Ready for a day of food so good it’ll make your taste buds dance a polka? Prepare yourself for a Warsaw adventure packed with flavors, dumplings, and enough pierogi to question whether you've turned into one. Here’s how this delicious (and mildly carb-coma-inducing) journey unfolds with your DMC in Poland!

1. Breakfast at a Traditional Bakery
Start your day like a true Varsovian—with pączki (Polish donuts) so big and fluffy you might mistake them for pillows. These bad boys are filled with jam, but don’t be fooled—this is not your typical jelly donut. Pair it with coffee so strong it could double as rocket fuel, or tea if you like to pretend it’s calming you down from all the sugar. You’ll also find obwarzanki—a chewy, ring-shaped bread that looks like a bagel but will politely correct you that it’s not.

2. Exploring Local Markets
Now that you're all sugared up, hit the local markets like Hala Mirowska or Hala Gwardii, where you'll wander through aisles packed with fresh produce, pickled things, and more kielbasa than you thought possible. Every type of sausage under the sun! Grab some oscypek, a smoked cheese from the Tatra Mountains that smells like a campfire but tastes like heaven, or treat yourself to a dollop of smalec—which is basically pork fat on bread because the Polish don't mess around when it comes to flavor… or cholesterol.

3. Street Food Lunch – Zapiekanka and Pyzy
For lunch, it’s street food time! Meet zapiekanka, the rebellious cousin of pizza and baguette that decided to smother itself in mushrooms, cheese, and ketchup because why not? If you're feeling adventurous, go for pyzy—Polish dumplings filled with meat or potatoes. They're like pierogi, but rounder, like they hit the gym.

4. Sampling Pierogi and Polish Classics
Alright, now you’re in the big leagues. These Polish dumplings are so iconic, they practically come with their own fan club. You’ll find pierogi ruskie, filled with potato, cheese, and onion—a combo so comforting it might hug you back.
Throw in some żurek (sour rye soup with sausage and egg) or bigos (hunter’s stew). Bonus points if you can say “żurek” without spitting a little.

5. Traditional Polish Desserts
At this point, you’re probably questioning whether your pants will fit by the end of the day, but who cares—you’ve earned dessert! Try sernik, a cheesecake so rich, it might as well come with a trust fund. Or go for makowiec, a poppy seed cake that requires more seeds than you thought humanly possible. And don’t forget szarlotka, Poland’s answer to apple pie, only better because it’s Polish.

6. Craft Beer and Vodka Tasting
Feeling brave? It’s time for some craft beer… or better yet, vodka. At a vodka bar, you’ll sample varieties like Żubrówka (bison grass vodka), which is as wild as it sounds, or fruity vodkas that go down way too easily. Be prepared—vodka tastings are serious business in Poland. You might get a side of pickles, herring, or tatar (Polish steak tartare) because apparently, raw meat is the best companion for shots.

A Food Tour Through Warsaw does not end here! Rather get ready for some serious cooking....

7. Pierogi Cooking Class
Now, after all that eating, you’re going to make the food yourself. It's pierogi cooking time! Under the watchful eye of a chef you’ll learn to make dough, stuff it with potatoes, cheese, or mushrooms, and fold them in a way that doesn’t make them look like deflated footballs. It’s trickier than it sounds, but the reward? You get to eat your own pierogi creation, probably with a side of pride and butter. Lots of butter.

8. Evening Stroll through Old Town
Finally, after waddling out of the cooking class, take a slow, contemplative stroll through Warsaw’s Old Town. As you admire the cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, you’ll reflect on your food tour and realize that you may never be hungry again. Ever.

But it’s okay because you’ve just eaten your way through Warsaw like a true Polish food lover.

Now, go on and live that pierogi-filled dream!
