Visa Free Travel in Kenya - President William Ruto made a major announcement recently, announcing that visa will not be required for entering into the country starting 2024. Following this release, an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) has been put in place to help in pre-identification of all the people planning to visit Kenya.
According to the latest update from Kenya’s Ministry of Interior and National Administration, approximately 10,000 ETA applications have been received with over 4,000 of them already being processed successfully. The sequence for processing is guided by the travel itineraries given by every applicant.
The introduction of ETA is aimed at establishing a just system that is also faster and reliable taking into consideration security concerns and other strategic interests for Kenya.
Foreigners excluding East African Community (EAC) citizens are now subject to uniform entry requirements and fees of $30 ETAs. Under the new system processing time has drastically reduced from 14 days to a maximum period of 72 hours.
When making an ETA application, travelers must possess a valid passport as well as provide contact details; show proof of accommodation booking; and supply their flight schedules. Applications should be sent at least three days before travelling in order for authorization to take place on time. It would be appropriate for tourists to consider applying within three months after having made bookings on accommodations plus other transportation means.
It is important to remember that all foreign visitors including children and infants are required by law to get ETAs. Travellers can use their existing Kenyan visas instead of having an ETA if they have one.
