Traffic Solution Bali : Introducing Light Rail

Bali is home to 4 Million people, mostly concentrated around Denpasar and the Southern Beaches. It's now on the brink of something that will help the traffic problems - namely a Light Rail. 

Addressing the Traffic Challenge

Currently, Bali lacks a railway system, but plans are in motion to introduce a Light Rail Transit (LRT) network. This ambitious project aims to connect I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport directly to top resorts in the island’s southern region, including Jimbaran, Seminyak, Kuta, Nusa Dua, and Sanur. This railway system should drastically reduce travel times during peak hours which will make travel so much easier and faster for both locals and tourists

Project Collaboration and Development

This unique project sees Bali’s transportation authorities partnering with Jakarta to bring the railway to fruition. While initial discussions considered an overland rail network, recent developments indicate a shift towards an underground system. This approach aims to expedite project completion while minimizing environmental impact.

Environmental Considerations and Regulations

The LRT system must comply with Bali's land management laws, which protect temples, sacred areas, and agricultural land, and stipulate that no structure should exceed the height of a palm tree. The planned underground railway, stretching 4.9 km, is estimated to cost IDR 5 trillion. Although this method is three times more expensive than an overground construction, it aligns with the island's commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

Projected Costs and Routes

The total investment for the underground metro system is projected at $592 million (IDR 9 trillion). The railway will feature two circular tracks:

•  Track One: From Bali Airport to Central Denpasar, Reno, Sanur, and Benoa.
• Track Two: Extending to Seminyak, with stops at the popular beach resorts of Kuta and Legian.

Timeline and Impact

Local media reports that the this LRT Project should start in September 2024. Once operational this railway will make revolutionise the travel for tourists arriving in Bali, easing traffic jams which means a faster and more efficient way to explore the island.
